Project Manager (Data Analytics) – Substation Engineering
Technical Shared Services, Substation Engineering

WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

  • This position will be based out of The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL or the General Services Headquarters in Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta).
  • This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 25%), primarily between Alabama and Georgia.
  • Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

JOB SUMMARY

The position is responsible for leading the strategic direction, development and delivery of data analytic systems, visualization tools, performance metrics and reporting for TSS Engineering to increase customer value.  The position responsibilities include a blend of software development expertise, engineering expertise, project management skills, and process improvement skills. This position will serve as the analytics solution developer and communications lead utilizing disparate data sources and platforms while leveraging skills in data parsing,

JOB QUALFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills) 

Education:

  • A degree in an analytical field is required. Some examples include, but are not limited to, finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering. 
  • A degree in Engineering or Computer Science is highly desirable including advanced degrees or Professional licensing. 

Preferred Experience/Skills:

  • 5+ years of experience in developing data manipulation scripts, Power BI dashboards, low-code applications, web applications, desktop applications, and / or internal adaptive web applications for generation and presentation of business performance metrics is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Palantir Foundry is required.
  • Experience with languages such as SQL, Python, and/or R is required.
  • Knowledge of electric utility power transmission lines / substation engineering business and overall technical shared services knowledge or applicable relevant industry knowledge is a plus
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills with a natural curiosity and a desire to learn
  • Self-Starter with the ability to work independently with minimal guidance 
  • Comprehensive consulting skills with proven ability to work with and influence others
  • Ability to build productive relationships and work in a fast-paced, competitive environment while handling multiple assignments
  • Ability to solve ambiguous or open-ended problems, creating structure to deliver value and actionable insights for customers
  • Experience manipulating large datasets and databases with working knowledge of big data and data management technologies, data management is a plus. 
  • Proficiency with standard business and analytics software (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel) is required.
  • Proficiency with low-code development environments such as Microsoft PowerApps.
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms such as Azure is a plus.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of data modeling, data integration and visualization techniques is required.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the strategic direction, development and delivery of data analytic systems, visualization tools, performance metrics and reporting for TSS Engineering to increase customer value of engineering services provided.
  • Establish relationships and effectively communicate with employees, management, vendors, peer groups and subject matter experts.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the effective use of data visualizations to drive better work management.
  • Provide formal and informal training to department end users around data visualization and analysis.
  • Actively participate in internal and industry user groups to stay abreast of latest visualization tools and data analytics techniques. 
  • Facilitate the implementation of data driven processes improvements for TSS Engineering.  This includes the development and management of performance visualization tools for established department process flow maps associated with the Gate process. 
  • Support Southern Company system committees such as the Southern Company Procurement Strategy Committee with the creation and enhancement of a system-wide common data analytic and visualization tools for equipment request and demand planning.
  • Serve as the software and database subject matter expert for TSS Engineering.
  • Support critical, high-visibility projects that demand specialized data analytics or unique reporting requirements.
  • Leveraging data analytics, identify inefficiencies in existing design processes and lead initiatives to improve productivity, accuracy, and project deliverables.
  • Support evaluation, selection, and implementation of new tools, software, or methodologies that enhance the engineering team’s capabilities.
  • Serve as a point of contact for TSS Engineering Customers to support collaborative data reporting requirements as needed for financial, regulatory, inventory management or related needs.
