The Semel Institute is seeking to hire a full time Bioinformatics Programmer 2 who will assist in computational and statistical analyses in multiple projects in the lab, including maintenance of our next-generation sequencing pipelines using languages such as Python, PERL, R and Bash scripting. In this role you will work closely with lab members to integrate transcriptomics with genomics and epigenomics to better understand how genes work together at a quantitative and systems biology level to alter risk for neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders. This will include, but not be limited to, managing large genomic data sets across multiple computational resources including cloud services such as Amazon Web Services; support record-keeping in database systems such as MySQL; and analyzing data related to brain development and autism from human and animal models. Background in genetics or bioinformatics is highly desirable.

Pay Range: $36.49 - 76.05

Required:
  • Experience with a programming language such as Python, R, or PERL. 
  • Shell scripting and running programs on a supercomputer grid. 
  • Ability to learn new computer languages and software as needed. 
  • Ability to work on several projects simultaneously and switch focus as needed.
  • Excellent attention to detail. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics, computer science or a related field, and one year of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; and ability to work with multiple individuals. 
  • Ability to create and maintain accurate and organized lab records, including software documentation. 
  Preferred:
  • Experience with cloud computing services such as Amazon Web Services. (Strongly Preferred)
  • Previous experience in a computational biology lab or field. (Strongly Preferred)
  • An understanding of statistics including p-values, multiple hypothesis testing, and correlation. 
  • General knowledge of University procedures. (Strongly Preferred)
