AI Engineer (DSCAA)

How will I help?

The role works within delivery squads focusing on building and operationalizing AI applications and ML models that will further enhance our service and product offerings. 

The role will be responsible for designing, developing, and deploying machine learning models and gen-ai agentic applications that solve complex problems and enhance our products and services. This role will work closely with data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to integrate machine learning solutions into production systems. 

Role responsibilities include:

  • Design and implement machine learning models and algorithms to address business challenges.
  • Preprocess and analyze large datasets to extract meaningful insights.
  • Implementation of data processing patterns, pipelines and APIs for batch, real-time and streaming, 
  • Implementation of Gen-AI solutions using various frameworks, prompting techniques, RAG patterns, fine tuning and testing of LLM & Gen-AI applications,
  • Deploy machine learning models into production environments and monitor their performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate Gen-AI, machine learning or hybrid solutions into products and services,
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in Gen-AI, machine learning and big-data processing and apply new techniques to improve existing models, 
  • Document code, processes, models, and experiments to ensure reproducibility and knowledge sharing.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to model performance and deployment.

What do I need?

  • Tertiary qualified in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Proven experience in machine learning (ML), including model development and deployment.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and data visualization techniques.
  • Deep experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Understanding of software development best practices, including version control (Git) and CI/CD.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Advanced programming skills in Python and familiarity with ML libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn.
  • Familiarity and practical experience designing Gen-AI application using applicable patterns, e.g. prompting, agents based, using frameworks such as LlamaIndex, LangChain, AutoGen, DSPy, etc. 
  • Experience with big data technologies like Hadoop, Spark, or similar for data processing and feature engineering, plus A/B testing and experimental design.

This role is part in the UNITE program will be Westpac’s biggest transformation project ever. It is a business-led, tech-enabled transformation - delivering simplification and benefits for our customers, employees and shareholders.
