Nuuly Principal Data Scientist
Philadelphia, PA, United States
Role Summary
Nuuly is hiring a Principal Data Scientist to join the Data Science Organization. This team is responsible for building, deploying, and maintaining Machine Learning systems to support the URBN brands. Our expertise spans project management, machine learning, software engineering, data engineering, and analytics. Unlike most Data Science organizations, our team is a full-service Machine Learning solution provider, taking projects from ideation and requirements through deployment of production services. We work closely with the Engineering teams on a wide range of projects including personalization and search, demand forecasting, and supply chain optimization.
The Principal Data Scientist role demands a deep understanding of data science and machine learning best practices, along with extensive experience conducting exploratory research and proof-of-concept (PoC) studies. This individual will help drive innovation through the identification and investigation of emerging methodologies, technologies, and algorithms, evaluating their potential impact on business outcomes.
In addition to leading advanced exploratory analyses, the Principal Data Scientist will play a critical role in guiding technical strategy, mentoring junior and senior data scientists, and collaborating with stakeholders across the organization to translate exploratory findings into actionable insights and production-ready ML solutions. This role requires an ability to operate at the intersection of innovation and practicality, balancing rigorous experimentation with strategic business objectives.
Role Responsibilities
- Independently identify, design, and execute exploratory proof-of-concept studies and machine learning experiments to innovate and address complex business problems.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to data science team members, promoting best practices in experimentation, analysis, and prototyping.
- Translate high-level business opportunities into novel, impactful, and scalable data science solutions.
Role Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional experience developing and validating exploratory ML prototypes and proof-of-concept solutions.
- Expert-level understanding of current state-of-the-art data science and machine learning methodologies, with a proven track record in innovation and experimentation.
- Advanced Python expertise; strong proficiency with SQL.
- Extensive hands-on experience debugging, diagnosing, and evaluating ML prototypes and experiments (e.g., MLflow, TensorBoard).
- Expert knowledge of ML frameworks and exploratory tools (e.g., scikit-learn, Jupyter Notebooks, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Hugging Face, LangChain, LLMs).
- Deep understanding of foundational machine learning principles (experimental design, model evaluation, metrics interpretation, validation methods, and generalization).
- Demonstrated capability to lead exploratory projects, mentor senior and junior data scientists, and guide technical strategy.
- Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to clearly articulate technical concepts and exploratory insights to diverse stakeholders, both technical and non-technical.
- Hands-on experience with Cloud platforms (Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure) preferred.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure concepts (e.g., virtual machines, cloud storage, IAM, serverless) is preferred.
- Knowledge of CI/CD best practices specifically within data science and experimentation contexts preferred.
- Experience with data and ML orchestration platforms and frameworks (e.g., Kubeflow, MLflow, Airflow) preferred.
- Prior experience within e-commerce, fashion, or related industries preferred.
- Master’s or PhD degree in Computer Science, Analytics, Data Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
