Position Summary:

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work jointly with a group of investigators in McGill University, University of Laval, University of Alberta, as with collaborators in several European institutions in a collaborative project that will build next-generation high-throughput microscopy devices. This position is funded by a CIHR Catalyst grant for the development and validation of new biomedical techniques and technologies. The position will be based in McGill University's Department of Physiology, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The project’s objective is to further develop a high-throughput imaging system based on the random access parallel imaging (RAP) system platform (https://doi.org/10.7554/eLife.56426). The RAP platform quickly collects high-contrast images in multi-well plates using an optical scanning approach that avoids the use of robotics. The current project aims improves RAP by:

Modifying RAP to enable capture  from many wells simultaneously.  Developing an optical path to capture fluorescence data. Developing machine learning methods to optimize data collection.

In addition, the project is committed to developing open source tools that benefit the imaging community. The applicant will design an optical system that can be easily built and used by non-expert users.

The applicant will work closely with the inventors of RAP technology and a group of academic and industry collaborators that include experts in optics, instrumentation design, bioimaging facilities management, and the integration of machine learning tools with microscopy. In addition, the applicant will  have access to an external open-science steering committee with expertise in microscopy to ensure project outputs follow best-practices for open-source science.

Qualifications:

1. The applicant should have a PhD or equivalent in biomedical engineering,  physics, computer science, optical engineering, opto-mechanics, or microscopy; or alternatively have demonstrated proficiency in developing  microscopy or optics tools as part of their research program in another field.

2. An interest in open source instrumentation development  (software and/or hardware).

3. Proficiency in programming (C, C++, Java or python).

4. Familiarity with machine learning tools and open source development is a plus.

Before applying, please note that to work at McGill University, you must be both authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in the province of Quebec at the campus where the position is based / located.
