Position summary:

As a member of the Canadian Centre for Computational Genomics (C3G) ARC team, the Software Infrastructure Developer (Cloud Analyst) will be supporting scientific research platforms deployed on the newly released SecureData4Health (SD4H) OpenStack cloud infrastructure. It currently includes 15,000 VCPU, 60 Petabyte of storage, 30 GPU and is growing as additional academic research projects join. The Software Infrastructure Developer (Cloud Analyst) will develop a deep understanding of the computing capabilities available at the C3G and advise researchers on leveraging these resources appropriately to achieve their scientific objectives. They will work on scientifically driven technological development projects where the presence of human health data makes security awareness and technological acumen a must. A few large-scale projects hosted or to be hosted on SD4H currently include the Pan-Canadian Genome Library, the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope Cancer Centre Network, the COVID-19-related VirusSeq Data portal, and the Centre Québécois de Données Génomique.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Implement the deployment and operation (DevOps) services for the Pan-Canadian Genome Library (PGCL) platform on the SD4H infrastructure.
  • Plan, develop and maintain new solutions to ensure that the C3G scientific platforms meet higher security standards.
  • Evaluate the needs of new coming SD4H research groups and users and help them tailor solutions using our OpenStack infrastructure to reach their research goals.
  • Document typical usage patterns of our platforms to ensure efficient use by C3G staff and external collaborators.
  • Collaborate with Calcul Québec and the Digital Alliance of Canada to leverage existing platforms and services, integrating them into the SD4H infrastructure.


Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Graduate degree in a fundamental or applied science with a focus on computation, or IT specialist with experience in a research environment.
  • Extensive experience with the Linux Operating Systems.
  • Mastering of scripting languages like Python and Bash.
  • Experience with container technologies, especially Docker, Podman, Kubernete and Apptainer.
  • Understanding of cloud computing in general. OpenStack experience is an asset.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure as code and provisioning technologies like Terraform and Puppet.
  • Knowledge of best practices in IT service management.
  • Excellent documentation skills.
  • Team player, willing to work most of the time in person rather than remote.
  • Good communicator, to exchange with stakeholders.
  • Can understand the requirements of people of different technical levels.
