BlueHalo is seeking an entry level Research Scientist in the area of fluid-structure interaction dynamics to join our team at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. The position will be performed in collaboration with of the Aerospace Systems Directorate and the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory. Predicting and controlling the behavior of fluid-structure interaction dynamics on aerospace systems is a rich area of fundamental and applied research. The research performed in this position will focus on the computational design, analysis, and experimental validation of fluid-structure interaction dynamics on aeroelastic structures. Expertise in reservoir computing, neural network design, bifurcation analysis, perturbation methods, topology optimization methods or data reduction techniques are all applicable to this project.  Expertise with finite difference and finite element (FE) methods, FE software (ie. ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL, Abaqus, etc), technical computing languages (ie. Python, Matlab, C++, etc) and/or parallel computing is desired.

Excellent oral and written communication skills are a prerequisite for employment. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and capable of working independently, as well as an effective collaborator with researchers from different technical backgrounds.

Primary responsibilities:

  •  Computational design, analysis, and experimental validation of fluid-structure interaction dynamics on aeroelastic structures
  •  Characterizing and optimizing the fluid structural interaction dynamics to perform intrinsic mathematical operations, such as performing input/output classification and leverage the local dynamics for state assessment

Requirements:

  • An advanced degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics or other related technical discipline is required (Recent Ph.D. or MS is preferred, grad students with defense scheduled will also be considered).
  • This position requires working within a government facility and requires U.S. Citizenship
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: computational fluid dynamics, dynamical systems, data reduction techniques, machine-learning based surrogate modeling
  • Prior experience with technical computing languages such as Python, Matlab, and/or C++
