 What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Support and lead financial and decision modeling activities to help drive desk views on transmission upgrades and grid changes in PJM, NY, NE MISO or ERCOT. 

  • Help  analyze market trends, pricing, and regulatory changes in the power sector. 

  • Conduct fundamental and technical analysis to inform trading decisions. 

  • Collaborate with traders to identify opportunities and mitigate risks. 

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret large datasets related to power markets. 

  • Utilize statistical tools and software to enhance trading models. 

  • Assess and manage risks associated with trading activities. 

  • Maintain and calibrate production-cost and stack models like Dayzer and Plexos. 

  • Generate regular reports on trading performance and market conditions. 

  • Present insights and recommendations to stakeholders via regular presentations and on request. 

  • Work closely with Trading, Sales, Analytics, Technology and Risk and other relevant groups. 

  • Participate in meetings to discuss market outlook and trading strategies. 

  • Conduct in-depth transmission and supply-demand analysis daily and develop models for price forecasting. 

 

How You’ll Succeed:

The Power Fundamentals Analyst is responsible for developing price forecasting models using a variety of approaches like production cost models, regressions and machine learning, analyzing market trends, developing trading strategies, and supporting traders executing trades in the power markets across multiple ISOs. This role requires a strong understanding of energy markets, financial analysis, and risk management and skills to digest and summarize large amounts of data from disparate sources to make thoughtful recommendations. Candidates should be highly self-motivated to learn about energy markets and be able to communicate clearly to all stakeholders and collaborate across the desk. 

 

Who You Are:

A Power Fundamentals Analyst requires a diverse set of skills to effectively analyze market trends, develop strategies, and manage risks. Here are the most important skills for this role: 

  • Data Analysis: Ability to interpret complex datasets and extract meaningful insights using statistics 

  • Market Analysis: Proficiency in assessing market trends and pricing dynamics. 

  • Statistical Software: Familiarity with tools such as R, Python, or MATLAB for modeling and analysis. 

  • Experience with production-cost modeling in PJM, NY, NE MISO or ERCOT preferred in a model like Dayzer or Plexos 

  • Prefer proficiency in power system analysis software (e.g., PSS/E, ETAP, or similar). 

  • Excel Proficiency: Advanced skills in Excel for data manipulation and financial modeling. 

  • Database Management: Knowledge of SQL for querying and managing large datasets. 

  • Understanding of Financial Instruments: Knowledge of derivatives, options, and other financial products used in trading. 

  • Report Writing: Capability to generate clear and concise reports for stakeholders. 

  • Presentation Skills: Ability to present complex information in an understandable manner to non-technical audiences. 

  • Critical Thinking: Ability to evaluate situations and make informed decisions quickly. 

  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust strategies based on changing market conditions. 

  • Energy Market Understanding: Familiarity with the power sector, including regulatory frameworks and market structures. 

  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities. 

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills to explain drivers of transmission congestion in short and long term. 

  • Passion for the energy sector and commitment to continuous learning.

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package. This role has an expected salary range of $115,000 – 135,000 for the New York, NY market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position. The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which also may include a discretionary bonus component. CIBC offers a full range of benefits and programs to meet our employee’s needs; including Medical, Dental, Vision, Health Savings Account, Life Insurance, Disability, and Other Insurance Plans, Paid Time Off (including Sick Leave, Parental Leave, and Vacation), Holidays, and 401(k), in addition to other special perks reserved for our team members. 

 

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location. Additional total compensation and benefits details will be provided during the hiring process.
