Position Overview:
Brunswick’s Boating Intelligence Design Lab (BI-DesignLab), a member of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Research Park, is seeking a Software Engineer. The Software Engineer will be the primary owner of back-end development for the Lab. This will include building POC style projects that will showcase applications of technologies for the recreational marine market.
The Software Engineer is responsible for building and supporting cloud applications, assisting with software architecture level decisions, determining appropriate tech-stack in conjunction with the Brunswick IT services, developing and maintaining relationships with external vendors of interest, and other tasks. The BI-DesignLab is an innovation space and advanced engineering center for Brunswick Corporation and full-time employees of the Lab should expect a broad range of projects. The nature of an advanced engineering lab requires the ability to work on projects independently, creatively apply domain knowledge, and be flexible with project requirements.
The Software Engineer will be the primary owner of “server side” solutions at the Lab, the primary near-term projects being heavily invested in deploying AI and ML models on the cloud. Other team members at the Lab are responsible for edge and front-end solutions. The Software Engineer is expected to work closely with other members of the Lab to deliver projects cross-functionally, as well as diligently represent the work at the Lab to the rest of the organization. Brunswick is continuing to invest in AI/ML, and this position will be heavily utilized in those investments for the foreseeable future. Brunswick does not do pure research and development of AI and other technologies, but rather application of existing and well understood technologies. The software engineer should be knowledgeable about available off-the-shelf solutions and how those may be applied to problems, but should also be willing and able to creatively apply knowledge outside of the scope of off-the-shelf solutions.
As a member of UIUC Research Park, the Lab has the benefit of being able to resource interns from the student body to help work on projects on-site. Full time employees of the Lab are expected to manage and mentor up to five (5) interns who will help execute the varying projects at the Lab. The Software Engineer will be asked to help determine projects that could be executed by interns, identify skills required to execute those projects, develop job descriptions, attract individuals capable of executing those projects, manage the workflow of hired interns, and identify high performers for potential to bring into Brunswick as full-time employees.
At Brunswick, we have passion for our work and a distinct ability to deliver.
Essential Functions:
Due to the nature of the Lab, it is difficult to capture all the responsibilities and projects for a full-time engineer accurately. The following list is not exhaustive but alludes to the kinds of workflow that will be expected.
Quickly understand problem statements and formulate a variety of possible solutions
Although the Software Engineer will own back-end development, employees of the Lab must be pragmatic when approaching problems and ideate a large variety of possible solutions even outside of their own domain
Work with the teams that develop and deploy software solutions for the broader public to ensure agreement and commonality in tech stack
Write and maintain code specific to active or previously executed projects as well as train cross-divisional engineers in the use of the code where necessary
Participate in code reviews for the Lab
Collaborate across multiple teams to plan, build, and test complex functionality
Create and analyze metrics that are leveraged for debugging and monitoring
Triage issues, root cause failures, and coordinate next steps
Partner with design to turn needs into features while balancing user experience with engineering constraints
Diversity of thought and experiences is fundamental when imagining the unimaginable. Certain skillsets/experiences are necessary; however, others can be developed along the way.
Required Qualifications:
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
Strong engineering background from industry or school, ideally in areas/fields such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics
5+ years of experience in a software development environment, with a preference for C++ and Python although not limited
3+ years of experience developing cloud applications
Experience building software solutions involving significant amounts of data processing and analysis
Ability to quickly understand and navigate complex systems and established code bases
A desire to work on unique software that has a real-world impact
A desire to work with interns who are still in university
Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
Willing and able to work full time in office at the BI-DesignLab in Champaign, Illinois
Preferred Qualifications:
10+ years of experience in a development environment, with a preference for C++ or Python
5+ years of experience developing cloud/back-end applications
Experience developing with Azure
Experience developing, fine tuning, and deploying Machine Learning algorithms in applications

A learn-everything attitude
Working Conditions:
The Software Engineer position is on-site at BI-DesignLab. You must be able to be in the office five days a week. There is no requirement for lifting heavy things or performing strenuous activity, although occasionally it may be requested. Occasionally, there will be the need to get on and off boats at various marinas.
There will be occasional travel. Once a quarter or less is the expectation
The anticipated pay range for this position is $82,600 - $138,200 annually. The actual base pay offered will vary depending on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location.
