Why is this role important?

The Business Intelligence team is connected to every facet of the organization as a strategic partner, data solutions provider, and catalyst supporting the CBC’s product, content, and operational decision-making with data.

Cross-functional and collaborative by nature, we work to ensure that objectives, strategies, and tactics across all departments in the organization are aligned and delivering value to Canadians. As a result, we work closely with various front and backend product teams; Content Units including Radio, News, and Local Services; Customer Success; Marketing and Media Solutions; as well as our BI counterparts at Radio-Canada.

To help further scale our BI practice, we are seeking a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst (Lead Analyst) to join our team who will take the lead in ensuring the quality of our team’s work and collecting business requirements from our stakeholders and translating them into data questions for the BI team to solve.

As a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst, you will be part of a mature BI & data analytics practice at an organization that’s eager to use data to drive the growth of audience-facing products such as Digital Publishing (CBC News, CBC Sports, etc.), CBC Gem (Live and On-Demand Video) and CBC Listen (Digital Audio) as well as support the crucial work of our business-facing teams.

You will play a significant role in unlocking the value of business intelligence and predictive analytics across the organization and will be seen by others as a key strategic asset, a voice of reason, and a driver of high quality actionable insights across the organization.

Our BI stack consists of PowerBI for data visualization, Azure Databricks / Delta Lake for predictive modelling, data warehousing, and collaboration.

Here’s why we should work together:

Our BI team is, according to Gallup survey data, one of the highest scoring teams in engagement and job satisfaction in the Corporation. This means you would be joining a team with a high trust environment and a tradition of excellence.

Our digital teams’ values - collaboration, learning, and continuous improvement - embody who we are as a people-focused, digital-forward employer. We follow lean startup principles and use an Agile approach. Our dedicated people managers work closely with every individual to ensure we are leveraging their strengths, championing their ideas and supporting their pursuit of new skills and their desired career progression.

Here at CBC Digital Strategy & Products, we want you to be happy and feel good at work.  It is essential that work be a safe space where our employees are able to share their authentic selves with one another and to push each other to challenge conventions.

Perks you can look forward to:

  • Flexible work schedules, allowing you to prioritize yourself, your family and your work;

  • Work from home with intentionally scheduled in-office days for fostering greater collaboration and a culture of togetherness;

  • Competitive total rewards package;

  • Opportunities to work with cutting edge technology;

  • Opportunities for continued learning and professional development;

  • A creative and dynamic work environment, where your ideas and contributions can be heard, valued and respected;

  • A supportive management team committed to upholding the highest standards of diversity and inclusivity;

  • An environment which favours experimentation and an iterative approach in order to achieve the highest form of technical innovation.

How you will make an impact:

  • Take the lead in reviewing and revising the work of the other BI analysts and help implement best practices in agile BI development

  • Collect business requirements from stakeholders and translate them into data questions for the BI team to solve in a timely and actionable manner

  • Increase the velocity of the BI team’s work sprints through the above so we can go from insights to results better and faster

  • Conduct sophisticated analyses, descriptive, predictive, or prescriptive in nature, that may involve more than one analyst or multiple stakeholder groups

  • Enhance the quality of insights and scale of results generated by the team through your deep business domain knowledge and expertise in data analytics and applied data science

What you could bring to our team:

  • The expertise. You have 3 or more years of experience working with complex unaggregated data, especially clickstream or event data. You have applied data analysis and data science methods to business realities and have produced data products (insights, models, etc.) that have moved the needle.

  • The knowledge. You are acutely aware of the impact of data analytics on business decisions. You know how to analyze behavioral signals and turn them into actionable insights. You ask the questions that aren’t being asked that should be. You use business savvy and people skills to change outcomes, not merely data or technology. You know what a cross-product error is and how to check a 900-line SQL query for one. You are also a master of the funnel and know why it is wrong to measure performance only using the conversion rate. You can spot a suboptimal or misleading data visualization from a mile away. You know what oversampling is and can explain to a third grader how it can be addressed.

  • The technical skills.

    • Creating clean code and business logic and revising messy code and business logic

    • Advanced SQL, including CTEs, window functions, and nested queries

    • Advanced PowerBI, especially custom calculations and functions (DAX)

    • One or more of Amplitude, Adobe Analytics (Omniture), or any other enterprise web or product analytics implementations

    • Working with very large datasets (millions or billions of rows)

    • Statistical concepts (correlation, regression, significance, etc.), Python, predictive modelling

  • The drive. You thrive in an autonomous and ambiguous environment that rejects “business as usual.” You are curious with an ability to dig for insights, see the big picture, and keep up with industry changes
    .

  • The right attitude. You enjoy working with people and sharing your knowledge with them in a collaborative way. You approach things with a beginner’s mind and are constantly curious and learning.

  • The communication skills. You are skilled at presenting ideas to non-technical stakeholders and management. You know how to listen and empathize with others. You are fluent in English and are an excellent verbal and written communicator. A working knowledge of French is an asset.

  • The education. We are less interested in formal degrees and credentials and more interested in expertise gained through experience, but you may be a good fit if you have studied Data Analysis or Data Science, Applied Statistics, or have equivalent work experience.

Qualified candidates will be subject to a practical assessment of the above requirements.

Assets:

  • Development in enterprise data cloud environments (e.g. Azure Databricks)

  • How to use multiple BI tools, not just the one you use the most often

  • Git and version control

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.

  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
