About the Role

Are you passionate about data-driven decision-making and process optimization? Do you thrive on leveraging business intelligence to drive performance improvements?  

Publication speed is an important decision factor within the article submission process – it is one of a few primary factors authors look at when deciding to submit. To improve our publication speeds, in other words to achieve a significant reduction in our turnaround times (TATs), we are looking for a Data Analyst/Senior Data Analyst. The Data Analyst/Senior Data Analyst plays a hands-on role in realizing an optimal flow of our articles along our pipeline. Better TATs offer an enhanced experience to our authors and contribute to Springer Nature’s overall business goals.

We are seeking a Data Analyst/Senior Data Analyst with expertise in business intelligence and strategic change management to drive a performance transformation across Springer Nature’s 3,000-journal portfolio. This role will focus on coordinating data-driven initiatives, ensuring alignment across teams, and empowering data-driven decision-making to optimize publishing processes, including article turnaround times. 

This role will be in our Berlin or Dordrecht offices on a hybrid working model.

Role Responsibilities:

Project & Data Coordination  

  • Manage strategic, cross-functional initiatives to optimize publishing workflows and improve turnaround times 
  • Monitor and track publishing performance using business intelligence tools to ensure alignment with program goals 
  • Design, build and maintain advances dashboards and reporting solutions using Looker and GBQ to monitor and track publishing performance, ensuring alignment with program goals 
  • We place a higher emphasis on the first item for our Senior Data Analyst, where we expect them to spend most of their time 

Change Management & Stakeholder Engagement  

  • Develop and implement change management strategies to foster the adoption of new data analytics frameworks and performance improvements 
  • Act as a key liaison between departments, ensuring alignment on business goals and priorities 
  • Communicate complex operational changes and data-driven insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clarity and engagement 

Data Analysis & Business Intelligence  

  • Leverage business intelligence insights to inform strategic decision-making and optimize operational efficiencies.  
  • Recommend and implement new KPIs, data definitions, and reporting frameworks to measure success effectively.  
  • Utilize tools like Looker, Google BigQuery to conduct in-depth performance analysis and identify optimization opportunities.   

Process Improvement & Innovation  

  • Identify inefficiencies in the article pipeline and develop targeted, data-driven solutions to enhance publishing speed and quality 
  • Promote continuous improvement by implementing best practices in program/project management and business intelligence analytics 
  • Advocate for technology integration, automation, and data analytics to streamline editorial and production workflows 

Author, Editor & Reviewer Experience  

  • Track and oversee metrics across multiple projects to ensure improvements align with author, editor, and reviewer experience goals 

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • A degree in Economics, Finance or a related field
  • 2-4 years (data analyst) or 5-7 years (senior data analyst) of experience in business intelligence, program/project management, data analytics, or process optimization 
  • Industry experience in publishing, consulting, supply chain, or related fields 
  • Hands-on experience working with Editorial, Production, Operations, and Technology teams 
  • Proven expertise in data-driven decision-making, process improvements, and efficiency tracking 
  • For seniors: track record of leading cross-functional initiatives to optimize performance 
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, Data Analytics, Strategic Management, Project Management, or a related field 
  • A PhD or advanced degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, or other data-intensive fields is highly valuable, but not required  
  • Certifications in PMP, Agile, or relevant methodologies are a plus 

Business Intelligence & Data Analytics 

  • Proficient in analyzing publishing performance metrics to drive strategic improvements 
  • Expertise in tools such as Looker and Google BigQuery 
  • Strong understanding of KPIs, data definitions, and reporting frameworks 

Project & Change Management 

  • Proven ability to manage cross-functional initiatives and align stakeholders 
  • Experience in Agile, Lean, Six Sigma methodologies (preferred) 
  • Strong strategic planning and execution skills  

Process Optimization & Innovation 

  • Ability to identify inefficiencies and implement data-driven solutions 
  • Experience in workflow automation and technology integration 
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on continuous improvement  

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication 

  • Skilled in communicating complex data insights to technical and non-technical audiences 
  • Strong ability to liaise with Editorial, Operations, and Technology teams 
  • Change management expertise to drive adoption of new analytics frameworks
