JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
We are searching for a Part-Time Sonar Engineer to join the Acoustic Data Science Department of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). We are seeking research engineers focused on the areas of acoustics, signal processing, algorithm development, modeling, and data analysis with an interest in undersea systems. You will join a team of scientists and engineers working to develop next generation sonar systems and sonar signal processing algorithms for a range of Navy applications. Our teams’ research areas include active sonar, synthetic aperture sonar, acoustic navigation techniques, acoustic remote sensing, sonar image classification, and sonar system modeling.

You will:
Work with fleet and industry partners to develop, maintain, and advance fielded sensors/systems
Develop new concepts for active sonar capabilities, including documentation and technical analysis of those concepts
Develop modeling and simulation of sonar systems and analysis of sonar data collected by fielded sensors/systems
This position will be filled at the senior professional level. Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related discipline; 14+ years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred skills/experience areas include:
MATLAB, Python, C++, time-series analysis, and signal processing
Ability to communicate complicated technical concepts at an introductory level
Ability to create and present briefs to senior level engineers and Navy personnel, conveying information pertinent to the specific audience
Domestic travel and occasional international travel to support testing as necessary
Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher is required.
Your working location can be fully remote but will require periodic travel to State College, PA and to remote locations to support testing and collaboration with team members and partners.
