About the role 
We are seeking a dynamic and visionary Director of Engineering to lead the technical strategy, delivery, and operational excellence of our digital commerce ecosystem. In this role, you will champion engineering best practices, foster a high-performance team culture, and ensure seamless integration of mission-critical platforms including CMS, PIM, and search and recommendation engines. You will own relationships with key external technology partners and vendors, ensuring effective collaboration and long-term scalability. As a cross-functional leader, you’ll partner closely with Product, Design, and IT to build robust, personalized, and data-driven customer experiences on a global scale.

  • Define and execute the vision and strategy for the core systems that power our digital product and eCommerce experience. 
  • Collaborate with Digital Product, IT, and business stakeholders to align solutions with strategic goals. 
  • Lead integrations of key platforms (Shopify, Sanity, Salsify, Algolia/Elasticsearch) ensuring seamless system interaction. 
  • Adopt and integrate AI/ML solutions to drive personalization and enhance the user experience. 
  • Drive the design of robust APIs and event-driven architecture to support scalable, real-time communication and enrich our data warehouse. 
  • Lead engineering excellence by prioritizing system reliability, establishing robust monitoring, logging, and alerting processes to ensure uninterrupted, high-performance operations. 
  • Mentor and lead a high-performing engineering team that loves to ship. 
  • Own external vendor relationships, ensuring effective delivery and system maintenance. 
  • Guide senior leadership on technology opportunities to enhance platform performance. 
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy and security regulations (GDPR, CCPA). 

Qualifications

We require…

  • 10+ years experience in software engineering or system integration, with 5+ years in senior engineering leadership roles managing large-scale, customer-facing platforms. 
  • Proven track record managing high-scale eCommerce platforms serving millions of customers with minimal downtime. 
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and optimize complex, real-time data pipelines and data flow systems, including experience with tools such as DBT, Snowflake, and Fivetran. 
  • Deep experience designing integrations for eCommerce platforms such as Shopify, Sanity, Salsify, Algolia, Elasticsearch. 
  • Proven ability to lead lean, globally distributed engineering teams, establish core competencies, foster team growth through personal and professional development, and cultivate an output-oriented culture focused on achieving KPIs. 
  • Deep expertise in modern DevOps practices, including infrastructure as code, automation, and continuous delivery at scale. 
  • Extensive expertise with observability, monitoring and alerting tools (Datadog, Sentry, New Relic, Grafana, Prometheus, Pager Duty). 
  • Track record of operational excellence, including reliability engineering (SRE) and incident response management. 
  • Strong knowledge of Azure cloud and container technologies (Kubernetes, Docker). 
  • Expertise in API architecture (REST, GraphQL) and designing event-driven systems. 
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript, Python, and SQL. 
  • Solid grasp of key data privacy and security standards relevant to global eCommerce operations.

    Preferred Qualifications 
  • Direct experience implementing and maintaining headless architecture with Shopify. 
  • Product-oriented and data-driven mindset. High agency in discovering insights from product data and leading teams with measurable outcomes. 
  • Experience with ML-driven personalization and recommendation systems. 
  • Proficiency with SWE agents (Cursor, Claude Code), active experimentation with new AI-enabled tools to enhance productivity and quality, and a vision to uplevel their team using AI.
