Staff Business Intelligence Engineer

The Staff Business Intelligence (BI) Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing data acquisition, analytics, and reporting strategies to support Product & Engineering Operations (P&E Ops). This role plays a critical part in consolidating and optimizing engineering and product KPIs from multiple systems (Azure DevOps, Atlassian, Salesforce, and other internal platforms), ensuring data-driven decision-making and operational efficiency.

The Staff BI Engineer will be instrumental in developing automated data pipelines, establishing a reporting cadence, and supporting ad hoc analytics requests. The role requires expertise in data gathering, data modeling, and visualization tools to build scalable and cost-effective analytics solutions. This position reports directly to VP, Product & Engineering Operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Data Acquisition & Integration

  • Develop and maintain data pipelines using APIs, direct database queries, and ETL processes to extract data from systems like ADO, Jira, Salesforce, and other internal platforms.
  • Architect and manage data models,(CS1) refresh schedules, retention policies, and automated ingestion processes to ensure data integrity and availability.
  • Work closely with application owners and DevOps teams to define data structures, transformation logic, and security measures, if applicable.

KPI Development & Analytics

  • Analyze complex business problems by identifying patterns and trends in product and engineering data.
  • Develop standardized KPIs and dashboards that provide meaningful insights into team performance, productivity, and process efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders (Product, R&D, Engineering Leadership) to refine and expand KPI reporting frameworks.

Reporting & Visualization

  • Build automated, self-service dashboards and reports using Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or other BI tools to deliver actionable insights.
  • Ensure that reporting solutions are scalable, cost-effective, and aligned with organizational needs.
  • Own the P&E Ops KPI reporting framework, ensuring timely updates and accuracy in published reports.

Advanced Analytics & AI Initiatives

  • Aid in defining processes for future phases of advanced analytics including natural language processing, machine learning, and AI (Artificial Intelligence).

Governance & Documentation

  • Ensure detailed documentation, runbooks, and version control for all reporting solutions.
  • Identify and resolve data inconsistencies, system glitches, and reporting errors through proactive monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain compliance with data security and governance policies for cloud-based and on-prem analytics environments.

Qualifications & Experience

Education & Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Business Analytics, or a related field.

Work Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in BI Engineering, Data Analytics, or a related field focused on data acquisition, reporting, and visualization.

Technical Skills & Knowledge:

  • Strong experience with APIs, data extraction, and automation for engineering/product systems (Azure DevOps, Jira, Salesforce).
  • Proficiency in SQL, Python, or R for data querying and transformation.
  • Experience with cloud-based data solutions (Azure, AWS, Snowflake, etc.).
  • Strong expertise in BI tools like Power BI, Tableau, Looker, Business Objects.
  • Experience designing KPIs and dashboards that translate data into actionable insights.
  • Knowledge of NLP, Machine Learning, and AI-driven analytics is a plus.

Soft Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to extrapolate and communicate data insights at an executive level.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a strategic mindset.
  • Experience in cross-functional collaboration with engineering, product, and executive stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
