Owned and Operated by Yancoal Australia, Mount Thorley Warkworth (MTW) is an open cut mine that provides the opportunity to live and work locally. Located 15 kilometres south-west of Singleton in the beautiful Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, MTW relies on both dragline and load haul systems for their continuous operations. The MTW Mine is the largest open cut operation in the region, employing approximately 1,450 people who reside in the local and surrounding communities.
Job Tasks and Responsibilities
Yancoal MTW is seeking an experienced and motivated Database and Analytics Engineer to join our Technical Services team on a fulltime basis. Reporting to the Medium-Term Planning (MTP) Superintendent this role is responsible for delivering high-quality engineering solutions in database design, data reporting, analytics and transparency to support decision-making and business improvements.
The successful candidate will provide guidance and training to the team on best practices for data analytics, visualisation, data interpretation and the generation of actionable insights. As a key member of the Technical Services team, you will contribute to achieving project targets whilst fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment that supports the company’s core values and culture. The role includes the following responsibilities:
• Design and build scalable, secure, and optimised databases for the Technical Services team.
• Implement best practices such as normalisation, indexing, and query optimisation.
• Design secure data integration pipelines and ensure low-latency data access for analytics.
• Collaborate with IT to ensure secure network configurations and troubleshoot data transfer issues.
• Ensure data quality and integrity by implementing validation rules and performing regular quality checks.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to address data issues and maintain governance using audit trails.
• Implement automated reporting tools and dashboards to enhance operational efficiency.
• Train team members on analytics and data visualisation tools, providing guidance on best practices for creating visualisations.
Skills and Experience

To be successful in the role you will also display the following skills and attributes:
Essential Criteria:
• Qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• 3-5 years’ experience with database management systems (DBMS) such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or SQL Server including experience designing and building databases from the ground up.
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to develop efficient, scalable database structures and designs.
• Experience with data analytics tools and techniques, including the ability to work with both structured and unstructured data, and optimise databases for analytics and reporting needs.
• Proficiency in tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
• Advanced Excel skills.
• Strong communication and time management skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage database-related projects effectively.
• Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, ensuring smooth communication and alignment on database requirements.
Desirable Criteria:
• Previous experience in the mining or construction industry.
