Under the direction of Information Services Leadership, the incumbent will serve as a senior member of the Enterprise Data Science team. They will build the framework, standards, and processes necessary to perform an agile data science function at Keck Medicine of USC. The incumbent will be responsible for solving some of healthcare's most challenging problems through design, data cleansing, algorithm creation, and interpretation of results. The incumbent will collaborate closely with clinical, operational, and research stakeholders to identify opportunities and implement AI solutions that improve patient care outcomes, support operational excellence, and advance clinical research. They will mentor junior data scientists to derive insights from the vast amounts of clinical and non-clinical data and implement algorithms on internal and external data sets. The incumbent will research and implement state-of-the-art AI algorithms, apply off-the-shelf AI and data-centric tools, and collect, store, and maintain data. They will monitor market trends and recommend new AI products and/or capabilities to add to the organization's data science toolkit. The successful candidate will have demonstrated competence in developing highly scalable artificial intelligence systems with multiple dependencies across teams and little to no oversight.

Essential Duties:

  • Design and develop complex machine learning models and statistical algorithms to address clinical and research outcomes.
  • Configure large language models (LLM) including RAG implementation and fine tuning LLMs to meet business requirements
  • Lead and mentor junior data scientists to extract, analyze, and interpret large datasets, particularly focusing on clinical healthcare operational, and environmental data.
  • Create detailed design analysis specifications, including input data specifications, data cleaning, algorithm development, and result interpretation.
  • Develop and implement advanced AI algorithms on clinical data records, ensuring scalability and robustness.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to identify opportunities, clarify business problems to solve, and implement AI solutions that advance patient care, improve operational excellence, and advance clinical research.
  • Ensure AI algorithms are implemented and maintained in a way that is explainable and meets the requirements of the Keck Responsible AI Review Committee.
  • Monitor industry trends and recommend new tools and capabilities to enhance Keck’s data science practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operational, clinical, and research stakeholders to ensure alignment and integration of data science initiatives.
  • Research and integrate state-of-the-art AI algorithms and tools into the organization's data science framework.
  • Collect, store, and maintain data in compliance with industry standards and best practices.
  • Provide insights and analytics that support strategic decision-making within the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate PhD in data science, statistics, computer science or related field OR
  • Req Master’s degree in data science, statistics, computer science or related field with 5 years' experience OR
  • Req Bachelor’s Degree in data science, statistics, computer science or related field with 7 years' experience.
  • Req Experience with the following: Implementing data science/AI solutions in a business setting, taking the solution from ideation to production. Data mining and statistical modeling (e.g. regression modeling, clustering techniques, decision trees, etc.). Analyzing large data dets using programming languages (e.g. Python, R, SQL and/or Spark). Implementing and fine-tuning large language models. Generating and visualizing data-based insights in software such as Tableau. Communicating data-driven insights and conveying actionable recommendations to clinical and business leaders with little to no data science experience. AWS Sagemaker or other data science platforms. Mentoring team members and leading agile projects.
  • Req Must have one of the following: PhD in data science, statistics, computer science or related field Master's degree in data science, statistics, computer science or related field with 5 years' experience Bachelor’s degree in data science, statistics, computer science or related field with 7 years' experience
  • Req Strong SQL skills. Must have the ability to write complex, highly-optimized queries across large volumes of data.
  • Req Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Req Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $133,120.00 - $219,648.00.
