Let’s introduce ourselves

We’re a venture-scaler powered by CommBank. That means we build, buy, and invest in startups that could benefit the bank’s 15 million customers and beyond.

Because of what we do, we’re really neither corporate, nor startup – instead we’re happily navigating the space between both worlds. We're close enough to benefit from the bank’s strategy, scale and stability, but separate enough that we have the autonomy to try new things. To be a sandbox for change

What about your team?

We are looking for a talented engineer to join the core team. This role is crucial for building innovative AI use-cases across x15 and enhancing our shared capabilities. If you're passionate about AI and enjoy collaborating with lots of different teams, this could be a perfect opportunity for you.

You will be primarily responsible for building software and providing technical tooling and advice that allows our ventures to operate safely at speed within a regulated environment. You should be comfortable communicating and working with a wide range of roles across the ventures.

Along with software engineering, there is an expectation you can help establish and evolve the technology policies and procedures that help run our portfolio of ventures safely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver full-stack applications that empower internal teams to build AI products faster and safer.

  • Build tools and frameworks to support model validation, automated testing, data lineage tracking, and AI output monitoring.

  • Develop and enforce guardrails and policies for responsible AI usage, including bias detection, explainability, and observability.

  • Partner closely with product managers, ML engineers, and domain experts across ventures and CommBank to co-create AI-driven experiences.

  • Maintain and evolve a shared codebase of components and services to accelerate adoption of AI use cases across ventures.

  • Implement robust CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and IaC to ensure reliability and speed in deploying AI services.

  • Drive technical reviews, pairing sessions, and architectural discussions to build high-quality, scalable systems.

  • Actively contribute to shaping the AI engineering strategy, bringing a product-thinking mindset to the table.

We are interested to hear from people who have the following experience and skills:

  • 8+ years of experience building and maintaining full-stack applications using TypeScript, Node.js, GraphQL, React, and React Native.

  • Demonstrated experience building platforms or tooling that support AI/ML workflows (e.g., validation pipelines, monitoring tools, feature stores, or data governance frameworks).

  • Familiarity with concepts like model interpretability, fairness, robustness, and secure AI deployment.

  • Comfortable navigating cloud infrastructure (AWS and/or Azure) and using DevOps practices (Terraform, CDK, Docker, GitHub Actions, etc.).

  • Solid understanding of testing and observability, including unit/integration testing (Jest, Playwright) and monitoring (e.g., Splunk, OpenTelemetry).

  • Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams, including conducting code reviews, architectural guidance, and fostering growth in others.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

  • A proactive mindset—someone who enjoys taking initiative, owning problems, and seeing ideas through to delivery.

Desired

  • Experience working with ML platforms, data validation pipelines, or governance frameworks for AI models.

  • Understanding of key AI safety concepts, such as risk assessment, guardrail enforcement, and output explainability.

  • Prior experience in regulated industries (e.g., financial services, healthcare) is a plus.

  • Product-oriented mindset—someone who builds with the end-user in mind and collaborates closely with PMs and designers.

  • A passion for developer experience and building tools that empower other engineers to do their best work.

What’s in it for you?

Joining x15 gives you access to opportunities you won’t find in standalone corporate or startup roles.

You'd be joining a team of experts, united by a love of finding solutions and making an impact. That means considerable diversity in your day-to-day. In what other role would you get to work with early-stage startups, more mature ventures, and Australia's leading bank, in a environment that encourages fresh ideas and innovation?

  • Generous perks - Including staff discounts on a variety of brands & financial products

  • Flexibility - our community make their career fit their lifestyle

  • Opportunity to thrive in the space between – Access to a space between corporate and startup, where our people explore, innovate and create without fear.

  • A diverse community - Access to a brilliant network of talented humans who live and champion our values and do things a little differently- the x15 way.

  • We value a diverse range of backgrounds and ideas and know this is fundamental for our future success.

  • Access to broad engineering community and potential to work within different ventures and the bank in the future

If you're already part of the Commonwealth Bank Group (including Bankwest, x15ventures), you'll need to apply through Sidekick to submit a valid application. We’re keen to support you with the next step in your career.
