About your team:
You’ll be working centrally within our mission control room, aka Centrica’s group functions. From Finance and Data Science, to our Wellbeing and People teams - this is the engine of our energy system, where our various Centres of Excellence power up each of our brilliant businesses, ensuring they have all the support, technologies, and capabilities they need to get our customers to Net Zero by 2050.
We have an excellent opportunity for a Fundamental & Economics Manager to join our Fundamentals & Economics Team within Group Strategy.
Group Strategy oversee Centrica’s investment review process, including assessing investment proposals and making recommendations to Centrica’s leadership team. One of the core responsibilities of the Group Fundamentals & Economics Team is to support this process by running complex fundamentals economic models to provide price signals to the Group. Centralising a robust set of fundamental assumptions (the “house view”) and ensure consistent application and understanding across Centrica’s various businesses. The Group Fundamentals & Economics Team will be the owner of the house view and understand how variances to the assumptions impact the overall Group financial plan and investment outlook.
Location: Windsor based, but can also be UK flexible
What will you do?
Supports the production of crucial inputs to Centrica investment and trading decisions (the “house view”) spanning financial assumptions (WACC, interest rates, etc.), long-dated commodity curves (Brent, NBP, Baseload Power, Capacity, Battery, Peaker, Solar/Renewables and other ancillary curves as required)
Drives the build out of the Centrica Fundamental Modelling capability engaging with internal and external stakeholders to influence direction. Maintaining a balance of internal and external fundamental outlooks
Develop and maintain the European power fundamental market model Plexos. Ensuring model accuracy and testing against 3rd party views
Support projections with fundamental insights into House View forecasts, supporting the understanding and drivers for the views
Interact with wider modelling teams to ensure effective collaboration across the group
Provide routine back-casting of the model to maintain accuracy supported by market analysis to understand changing dynamics
Intellectual curiosity to understand the assumptions and details around:
Varying forward curves from 3rd party curves providers
Consistency of methodology/assumptions across different assets/commodities
Consistency with curves managed by Centrica’s Energy Marketing & Trading team
Various perspectives across Centrica from the Retail, Trading to Generation areas
Confidence to challenge the third-party curve providers on their outputs and assumptions understand and highlighting weaknesses
Collaborates to around the group to ensure a robust methodology and alignment of assumptions
Attention to detail and tenacious work ethic to ensure consistent application of inputs into financial forecasts and business cases
Identifies and continuously improves methodology and processes
Support in relationship management of 3rd party curves and market data providers
Responsibility for running the quantitative analysis of market fundamentals, forecasts and trends
Maintenance of the data warehousing of key information on market analysis and information supporting projections
Improving market awareness of the group providing stakeholder with market updates and commentary
What are we looking for?
Degree qualified with a quantitative discipline, preferably with an economics discipline
Strong problem-solving, quantitative, analytical skills and attention to detail
Strong experience using analytical and data manipulation tools such as Excel, SQL, Python
Strong presentation skills and comfortable in presenting to senior stakeholders
Experience in Energy Markets and a strong interest and understanding of market drivers
Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines and adapt to new challenges in a dynamic environment with shifting priorities
