Principal Machine Learning Engineer
to join KONE IT Enterprise Data & Analytics team in Espoo, Finland.
The team builds AI/ML use cases across business domains to enable business functions to make data-driven decisions and gain a competitive edge in our global landscape while driving modern data architecture with the latest cloud technologies.
The Principal Machine Learning (ML) Engineer leads the design, development, and industrialization of AI, ML, and advanced analytics solutions to solve business problems. With deep technical expertise, they develop AI/ML products and features of significant complexity using best practices, acting as the go-to person on technical aspects. They also proactively identify and drive adoption of innovations and best practices at scale.
The role requires strong communication skills to translate business ideas into technical requirements. They ensure delivery quality by applying appropriate development and quality practices. The Principal ML Engineer tracks technological progress, contributes to defining common methodologies and promotes optimal team practices. As a subject matter expert, they deliver trainings and mentor others, demonstrating strong communication, coaching, and leadership skills. The role also includes people management responsibilities.

Key responsibilities:
- Designing implementations and doing hands-on AI/ML development tasks in product team. Understanding the business needs, data, methods for industrializing AI/ML solutions and their limitations.
- Demonstrating in-depth business domain-specific knowledge, ensuring that deliverables are implemented with industry best practices, aligned with the design principles and architecture guardrails including planning and conducting quality actions such as code reviews and triages in the team.
- Maximizing reusability and usage of common design patterns across the AI/ML products with an aim to keep them lean and maintainable. Identifying technical debt regularly and ensuring that its management is prioritized in the product backlog.
- Planning the production and support operations for products and features to be deployed for end users, troubleshooting and resolving incidents and identifying root causes and resolving them when needed. Identifying improvement opportunities based on the performance metrics and user feedback.
- When agreed, takes additional responsibilities, such as leading organization wide capability development, engage with business stakeholders to provide AI/ML related advisory, representing KONE in internal and external forums such as technology forums, university collaboration etc.
- Team lead for machine learning engineers and data scientists.
To succeed in Machine Learning Engineer role, following professional experience will play a key role:
- Master's or PhD degree in a quantitative field, for example machine learning, computer science, physics, statistics or mathematics.
- Proven track record in applying machine learning and artificial intelligence to business problems using cloud technology, industrializing use cases to production grade solutions and continuously improving them.
- 10-12+ years of professional hands-on experience in machine learning, data science, software and/or data engineering.
- Technical expertise in Databricks for ML, AI, data science and governance. Experience with workflow orchestration, Unity Catalog, Spark (PySpark) and MLFlow. Databricks certifications preferred.
- Technical expertise AWS, especially in components such as DynamoDB, CloudFormation, Route53, S3, AWS CDK, and AppFlow. AWS certificates preferred.
- Technical proficiency on tools such as Gitlab/GitHub, Airflow, and Terraform for IaaC.
- Outstanding coding skills with multiple languages (Python, SQL ) with proven hands-on experience in industry standard software development life cycle methods, DevSecOps/MLOps practices spanning the full product lifecycle.
- Expertise in cybersecurity guidelines, data privacy, compliancy regulations and quality assurance practices.
- Ability to write outstanding code, write clear technical documentation and visualize your technical design.
- Practical experience in working with complex enterprise data landscapes and data structures.
- Experience in coaching and/or mentoring, leading teams, sharing knowledge and maturing MLOps practices.
- Passion to utilize agile development methodologies and tools (Jira, Confluence, draw.io).
- Ability to work in global multi-cultural team and effectively collaborate within the team.
- Ability to self-organize and be proactive, seek feedback, be courageous and resilient, and have excellent problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English language, and strong facilitation and communication skills.
