Yahoo
Yahoo is a global media and tech company connecting people to their passions. We reach almost a billion people worldwide, bringing them closer to what they love.A Little About Us
Yahoo brands comprise some of the premier destinations on the Internet -- Yahoo, Techcrunch, AOL, and more. This means that we rely on massively scalable, widely distributed, highly performant systems. If you want to help solve complex problems for systems like these, we are looking for you.
Yahoo's Search Analytics and Data Science team works on one of the largest online advertising and audience data sets in the world. We are responsible for delivering fast, clean, and relevant data that powers Yahoo’s consumer and advertising products. Our team sits at the intersection of large-scale data engineering and deep analytical insights, driving measurement, reporting, and business-critical decisions for the Yahoo Search ecosystem. As we modernize our infrastructure and migrate to cloud platforms like AWS and GCP, we face exciting, complex challenges—and we're looking for a skilled Data Scientist/Data Engineer to help us meet them.
In this role, you’ll bring your technical expertise and curiosity to dig deep into large, complex data systems. You’ll own your work end-to-end: from identifying and extracting the right data, building efficient pipelines, performing analysis, and presenting insights that drive product and business decisions. You’ll also ensure accuracy and efficiency of our analytics workflows as we modernize our systems in the cloud.
What You'll Be Doing:
Lead and conduct exploratory data analysis and investigations across Yahoo’s Search and advertising data sets to uncover trends, patterns, and anomalies.
Partner with product and engineering teams to understand marketplace behavior, user engagement, and performance drivers—then translate findings into actionable insights.
Own and execute ad hoc analytical requests, diving deep into data systems to answer complex product and business questions.
Support and improve the migration of data pipelines from on-premises (Linux/HDFS) to AWS and Google Cloud (GCP), working with principal data engineers and data architects.
Develop or optimize data infrastructure and workflows to ensure data reliability, scalability, and accessibility for analytical use.
Build scripts and tools to automate recurring tasks and increase efficiency in data processing and analysis.
Design, test, and deploy predictive or statistical models using historical data, with a focus on explainability and impact.
Present analytical findings to the immediate team and product leads; help frame the story and answer stakeholder questions confidently.
What We're Looking For:
3-6 years of experience in a Data Engineering, Data Science, or Analytics role.
Proven ability to pull your own data, work across various data systems, and perform hands-on analysis across complex datasets.
Strong proficiency in SQL and Python is a must; experience with R, Java, or scripting in Unix/Linux is a plus.
Comfortable navigating both analytics and engineering workflows — you understand how data is created, stored, and consumed.
Experience working with cloud-based infrastructure, especially GCP (BigQuery) and AWS (Redshift, S3, etc.).
Familiarity with big data technologies such as Spark, Hive, Hadoop, MapReduce.
Demonstrated ability to automate data tasks, improve workflows, and increase efficiency in analytics pipelines.
Experience with web and product analytics tools (Google Analytics, Amplitude, internal tracking systems, etc.).
Strong communication skills — able to explain technical results to non-technical audiences and work cross-functionally with engineering, product, and business teams.
Comfortable working independently with a hands-off management style, but open to feedback and collaboration when needed.
The material job duties and responsibilities of this role include those listed above as well as adhering to Yahoo policies; exercising sound judgment; working effectively, safely and inclusively with others; exhibiting trustworthiness and meeting expectations; and safeguarding business operations and brand integrity.
