Sr Engineer, Algorithm

Becton Dickinson (BD) recently completed the acquisition of the Edwards Critical Care business. This position is part of the Critical Care division, and as such will become a part of the BD organization in the future. Critical Care will operate as a separate business unit, called Advanced Patient Monitoring (APM) within BD's medical segment, aligning with BD's smart connected care approach. Applies knowledge of technical principles and BD systems/procedures to optimize product development.

How you will make an impact:

• Create, test, and/or improve complex signal processing algorithms, physiological models, time series models, control systems and/or machine learning models (including deep learning) by developing complex algorithm scripts, experiments and tests (including writing and executing protocols), analyze results, make recommendations, and develop reports, based on engineering principles
• Generate scripts for statistical data analyses, test methods, algorithm prototype and final code, etc., to establish/characterize algorithm and/or machine learning model specifications
• Create/update complex design control documents including algorithm requirement specs, and risk documents
• Analyze and interpret complex physiological and clinical data, animal model data, algorithm results data, Machine Learning model performance data, etc.
• Assign Algorithm support tasks; give instruction to technicians on conducting tests; train technicians and provide feedback; and coordinate technician work.
• Develop and execute engineering project plans (10%)
• Evaluate input and form a technical recommendation including physiological sensors, front-end electronic components, signal processing, algorithms, systems and subsystems
• Identify, evaluate, manage, and provide guidance to third parties, including establishing requirements and defining acceptance criteria
• May train, coach, and guide lower-level employees on routine procedures

What you will need (Required):

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or Scientific field, plus 4 years of previous related experience or
• Master's Degree or equivalent in in Engineering or Scientific field plus 3 of previous related experience or
• Ph.D. or equivalent in in Engineering or Scientific field including either industry or industry/education

What else we look for (Preferred):

• Proven expertise in usage of Matlab, and/or Python, and/or R and/or similar scripting tools and/or proven expertise in usage of software programming tools such as C/C++, C# and others
• Proven expertise in usage of Machine Learning tools
• Proven expertise in usage Control Engineering tools, such as Simulink..etc
• Strong documentation, communication (e.g., written and verbal) and interpersonal relationship skills including consultative and relationship management skills
• Proven expertise in statistical techniques
• Previous hands-on experience working with scripting and/or programming languages and/or machine learning tools required
• Basic understanding of databases (SQL and others)
• Substantial understanding and knowledge of principles, theories, and concepts relevant to Algorithm and/or Machine Learning model development, and/or Control Systems
• Strong problem-solving, organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills
• Substantial understanding of programming principles: algorithm scripting and/or software programming and processes and tools used in programming work
• Substantial understanding of design control processes
• Good leadership skills and ability to influence change
• Knowledge of and adherence to Edwards Environmental Health and Safety and Quality guidelines as they relate to department clean room medical device manufacturing
• Strict attention to detail
• Ability to interact professionally with all organizational levels
• Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast paced environment
• Must be able to work in a team environment, including inter-departmental teams and key contact representing the organization on contracts or projects
• Ability to interact with senior internal and external personnel on significant matters often requiring coordination between organizations

For California (CA), the base pay range for this position is $116,000 to $164,000 (highly experienced).
