Lilly has started the process for the implementation of its vision for the Lab of the Future (LoF) strategy. This journey started with the LUNA Program (currently underway) for the implementation of the LabVantage solution (planned to be developed and deployed from 2023 until 2028) replacing the current LIMS and LES solutions, but this is only the first step, which sets the foundational layer for the strategy.

The objective is that as part of that strategy, and building upon the LabVantage capabilities as an enabler together with other state-of-the-art technologies such as AI, the Lilly team develops and implement advanced functionalities to take efficiency and compliance levels at the labs to the next level, such as Advanced Sample Management, Method Standardization, Equipment Management, Lab Scheduling, Automation and more.

The Lilly Labs team is looking for an experienced Senior System Engineer and LoF Technical Lead that will lead those initiatives from the Tech@Lilly side and deliver a successful implementation.

What You’ll Be Doing

Your primary focus will be on leading the design, implementation, and productization of solutions under the LoF scope. These include (but are not limited to):

  • Modern Architecture: Establishing and maintaining full stack of scalable and resilient enterprise lab platforms with seamless integrations.
  • Comprehensive Data Strategy: Accelerate deployment of Lab Data Products through robust Data Governance and supporting standards enabling continuous improvement of standardized business processes and AI ready Visual Lab.
  • Standardized Business Processes: Provide infrastructure and system design enabling development and maintenance of global business processes and supporting master data.
  • Automation: Partner with Global Analytical Quality organization to automate repetitive tasks, reduce manual errors, and develop / implement strategy balancing testing in-line and off-line testing.

As a senior level System Engineer, you will serve as the lead for multiple LoF platforms and capabilities as described above, while also ensuring robust and scalable IT support processes and personnel are in place to accelerate deployment significant growth in Lilly Manufacturing. In addition, you will  partner with business SMEs (Quality Control and Operational Excellence teams), cross-functional solution architects, and third-party service providers on the design, configuration, and implementation of multiple products.  You will leverage technical and business process knowledge to influence strategy and design decisions that advance program goals of harmonized, simplified processes and sustainable solutions.     

How You Will Succeed

  • Bring your deep technical knowledge and experience to design and develop product architecture for Lab Information and Lab Execution platforms.
  • Build and develop a technical team across the global lab programs, always remaining prepared to harness the full stack of modern technology in alignment with business need.
  • Partner with business stakeholders, as well as cross-functional solution architects within the broader Quality function to design reliable and efficient solutions for the manufacturing laboratories.
  • Must ensure the compatibility, integration, interoperability, stability, scalability and usability of products/services proposed as standards to ensure an integrated architecture across interdependent technologies.
  • Partner with the different Labs application Architects to influence technical direction of software vendors, service providers, and the service delivery teams.
  • Utilize your understanding of the laboratory environment, emerging technologies and system functionalities to envision future system requirements and business needs.
  • Drive the site adoption of assigned solutions, ensuring consistency with Site and IT strategy, and using awareness of internal and external trends in collaboration with the Business SMEs.
  • Design robust, stable and resilient solutions with proper support processes, powerful monitoring and advanced error handling to ensure the continuity of business operations.
  • Communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders and influence decision making at senior leadership level.
  • Coach and Mentor peers (Lilly colleagues and external consultants) to support the Lab of the Future vision.
  • Review and approve documentation related to areas of responsibility (Validation Lifecycle documents, SOPs, policies, implemented IQPQ protocols, etc.) as appropriate.Establish key relationships with business users and other Tech@Lilly areas.

 What You Should Bring

  • Strong knowledge of key platforms such as SQL or other database technologies, Cloud Technologies (Azure/AWS), AI / ML, advanced analytics and visualization tools, Augmented Reality, Robotics and languages/concepts such as Python, JSON, SQL, Github, REST APIs, and Data Modeling.
  • Consistent track record in foundational lab platforms such as LabVantage LIMS/LES, MODA Environmental Monitoring, Binocs Lab Scheduling, Empower Chromatography, Tulip for Guided Execution / eLogbooks, and Integration technologies enabling data flow with downstream and upstream systems (e.g. SAP, MES, MQTT, Data Lakes, and Process Monitoring tools).
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams, including supervision of director reports.
  • Staying up to date with industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure that the organization's systems remain innovative and effective.
  • Ability to influence modern architectural design and driving the right strategic decisions to ensure global scalability and supportability.
  • Experience with Agile and Hybrid Agile development and delivery processes.
  • Experience supporting critical GMP processes and working in a regulated industry.
  • Proven ability to lead a cross-functional team of business SMEs and third-party vendors to deliver high-value, highly-critical solutions on time and with the right level of quality.
  • Strong understanding of Quality processes in IT applicable to Manufacturing Laboratories.
  • Excellent initiative and self-management skills as well as ability to lead teams, influence others and manage conflict.
  • Strong learning agility, communication at all levels, and problem solving skills.

Your Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related technical field 
  • Proven (10+ years) professional experience implementing and maintaining GMP systems.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$135,000 - $213,400

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
