Company Description:

Millions of people around the world depend on Surfline Wavetrak’s products to enrich their experiences in and around the ocean. Since 1985, our company has connected people with the ocean. Starting with surfers and expanding to offshore cruisers, anglers and a myriad of other ocean enthusiasts, we’ve made it our mission to deliver peak maritime experiences. We provide those who work and play in the ocean with all the advanced tools, personalized insights and immersive content to make their lives better -- supplying them with the information they need to make smarter decisions, seek out new experiences and gain valuable knowledge.

We are dedicated to bringing people together across the globe, and we champion and encourage those who bring different perspectives, ideas, and creativity. At Surfline Wavetrak, we recruit, employ, train, compensate, and promote regardless of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, disability, gender identity, gender expression, age, veteran status, and any other protected status.

Position Overview:

This paid internship offers the chance to play an active role on Surfline’s Innovation team, building commercial computer-vision and physical models to give surfers and other ocean enthusiasts accurate forecasts, as well as relevant real time information from a network of over 600 HD coastal cameras.

What You'll Do:

  • Engage in a self-contained project to take camera-derived or oceanographic forecast data and develop real world insight.
  • Manipulate, prepare and explore raw data in an exploratory data analysis phase.
  • Build models to develop insights from the data.
  • Test models and demonstrate insight that can inform our product pipeline.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The full life cycle of building robust machine learning models in a commercial environment, from data collection to model evaluation.
  • The importance of model data, methodical preparation and dealing with anomalies and issues.
  • Systematic attention to detail.
  • Hopefully some genuinely new ocean science insight!

What We're Looking For:

  • Someone who can stay organized with large quantities of data.
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to focus on a task until completion.
  • Basic functional understanding of Python. We aren't looking for an expert, but you should know the difference between a list and a tuple, and how to write a function.
  • Comfortable in a linux environment, or a desire to learn.
  • Eastern Time Zone preferred.

You May Also Have:

  • Previously written basic Python scripts.
  • Knowledge of differentiable calculus.
  • An interest in computer science and machine learning.
  • A passion for surfing and the ocean.

Broader Portfolio-Wide Intern Program:

Since 2019, TCG has run a broader portfolio-wide intern program connecting interns across TCG and our portfolio companies. This unique initiative offers interns the chance to participate in:

  • Technical Training: Participate in training sessions that help sharpen your technical skills, particularly in areas such as financial modeling, sourcing, and themework.
