About the Role

 

As an intern, you'll be embedded within the Agriculture Product Centre, working in a vibrant, multi-cultural team serving clients around the world. You'll collaborate closely with experts and leaders in our underwriting and actuarial departments, all part of Swiss Re's Specialty business. Your tasks will include:

 

  • Understanding weather, market and economic patterns: quantify how different factors drive re-/insurance risks across geographies both backward as well as forward looking
  • Estimation of dependency structures: derive robust covariance matrices using sound mathematical/statistical approaches
  • Applying data science principles using R and/or Python: extract, merge and preprocess large datasets and work with satellite images to run algorithms on
  • Scenario analysis: assess how ceteris paribus changes will affect risk dependencies
  • Establish workflows/pipelines that can be updated regularly/dynamically
  • Assist in creating documentation for calibration processes and maintaining comprehensive records.
  • Collaborate with senior team members and cross-functional teams to improve and update existing methods.


The internship will be for 4-6 months, starting in Spring/Summer 2025 in Zurich.

With over 200 underwriters across 10+ offices, our team combines Swiss Re's dedicated Specialty lines of business in Reinsurance: we are Agriculture, Aviation, Credit & Surety, Cyber, Engineering and Marine & Energy. Within the Agriculture team, we want to deepen our understanding of dependency structures, how weather patterns but also market as well as economic factors drive correlation across our global portfolio.


About You


We are looking for a brilliant critical thinker who is naturally detail-oriented and possesses strong interpersonal skills. Your flexibility and curiosity enable you to learn new skills quickly. Ideal candidates will have:

 

  • Master student in econometrics, quantitative finance, mathematics or physics. 
  • Knowledge of spatial statistics or interest in natural sciences such as agronomy and geo sciences are a plus.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and self-starter demeanour.
  • Proficiency in statistic software (Python or R) as well as Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt to dynamic insurance industry requirements.
  • Team player who thrives in an international work environment. 
  • Reliable, open-minded, creative, and enthusiastic.
  • Excellent oral and written English. Other languages are a plus.
