Where the team fits in 

The Lead Data Engineer role sits in the Wolf squad within the Core Property Data portfolio of PropTrack.

We are the property data engine room of REA. Our mission is to:

  • Improve the quality, access and usage of our property data for consumers and customers

  • Build reusable data products and patterns that unlock value stored in our data

  • Create unique insights based on property, listing, user and customer data

  • Invest in the reliability, quality and security of our systems and data

 

What the role is all about 

 

As a Lead Data Engineer, you will support the team in the following ways:

  • Leading the team to design, implement, test and deploy new data pipelines using dbt, Airflow, BigQuery, Kafka and other technologies

  • Champion and drive best practices for quality software delivery from inception and design to build and deployment

  • Supporting and driving continuous improvement of our production systems and being an advocate for their overall system health

  • Working with product managers, delivery leads and tech leads during inceptions and design phases while understanding business priorities and communicate technical options, report on progress and express ideas

  • Leading the implementation of significant product initiatives

  • Provide technical team leadership for a team of highly capable engineers

  • Provide technical mentoring and guidance to less experienced members of the team

  • Directly manage data engineers within your team

 

Who we’re looking for 

  • Approximately 7+ years of experience working in software and/or data engineering

  • Strong programming skills. We have systems written in Python, Typescript, Ruby and a lot of SQL, and we expect you to be able to be productive in any of these environments and be an expert in at least one

  • Experience with modern software development techniques such as test-driven development, microservice architecture, functional programming, and continuous delivery

  • Experience with DevOps tools and techniques, particularly AWS, CloudFormation, and Docker

  • Good data analysis and exploration skills, e.g. Pandas, SQL, Tableau, Google BigQuery

  • Advanced skills in implementing solutions that scale and perform to support the needs of our customers

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with business stakeholders

  • Someone passionate about data and the latest data technology

  • Proven experience as a senior team member influencing architectural and delivery outcomes
