Geospatial Data Analyst Intern

This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program

This position works out of Arlington County’s Department of Environmental Services (DES), Division of Transportation, Transportation Engineering & Operations Bureau (TE&O), managing data (including data entry, compiling, and analyzing) and collecting data in the field related to the County’s regulation of curb space. The position will assist with studies as assigned, will collaborate with other staff to explore how best to use data to answer curb space management questions, and will be expected to develop an understanding of the related geospatial and other datasets the County maintains that could complement work of the team. The position will also importantly support the County’s multi year Performance Parking pilot project, with an emphasis on geospatial analysis of system data, meter transaction data, and other types of data, data integrations, and assisting others on the team with understanding, reviewing, and quality-checking the project contractor’s work.

Under the guidance of a mentor, responsibilities include:  

• Collecting data manually in the field, including observations of demand and measurements of curb assets;
• Deploying, retrieving, extracting, and/or analyzing data from field data-collection equipment such as video cameras;
• Compiling, validating, and analyzing data from various sources to find trends, anomalies or errors and to answer questions;
• Drawing conclusions and recommending actions based on data analysis;
• Organizing and storing data in an accessible format and coordinating integration of data on various platforms; and
• Documenting data-collection and analysis steps for presentation and replication in the future.

This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.

Internship

Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

• We anticipate filling these positions to begin between July 2025 and September 2025 depending upon the needs of the assigned agency.
• Interns must be ready to begin employment by September 1, 2025.
• This is not a fully remote opportunity, in-office hours are to be expected.
• Interns are expected to participate in both in-office work assignments and as part of an in-person training cohort.

Minimum:

Recent, 2024 and/or 2025 college graduates earning either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree* in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the internship must have:

• No significant professional-level work experience (less than one year) in the internship field; and
• Applicants who are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program related to the internship must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours.

*Any time lapse between earning degrees may not include significant professional-level work experience.

Degree Requirements: Computer Science, Data Science, Geography, Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, Civil Engineering or related discipline. Applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with an undergraduate degree no later than September 2025 and from candidates who are recently graduated or currently pursuing a Master's Degree in their field as described above.

Desirables:  Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

• G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred and applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts;
  ArcGIS and geospatial analysis;
• R, Python, Power BI, Tableau, or MS Access software applications;
• Working knowledge of pivot tables, queries, database connections, SQL, and/or Microsoft DAX;
• Creating charts, graphs, maps; and/or
• Course work or prior experience that required working with data describing transportation systems and the use of those transportation systems, such as parking transactions, occupancy counts, transit ridership, traffic counts, etc.

Special Requirements

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted.  It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Driver’s License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence in order to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

Additional Information

Work Hours: This is a full-time position (40 hrs/week) Monday - Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm with some flexibility and telework opportunities available upon prior approval from the supervisor. This is not a fully remote opportunity. Employees will be expected to be in the office at the discretion of the Supervisor and needs of the agency as well as to attend in-person classroom training.
