Arlington County Government’s Department of Environmental Services (DES) is hiring a Transportation Data Analyst Intern to serve in the Transportation Engineering and Operations (TE&O) Bureau. Under the guidance of a mentor, this Data Analyst Intern will assist in setting objectives and priorities for transportation data collection, management, and research. Utilizing county equipment including videos, cameras, tubes, classifiers, speed tracking devices, and other methods to collect traffic data on all modes of transportation (vehicles, heavy vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, transit riders, etc.), the Intern will be responsible for summarizing the data collected and creating visuals and maps for communication purposes.

Under the direct supervision of a mentor, responsibilities include:

  • Driving County vehicles to/from data collection locations; 
  • Managing and administering data collection records, equipment and supplies while ensuring the appropriate filing processes are used to store all collected information; 
  • Creating data summaries, visualizations, and maps using software including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and ESRI ArcMap; 
  • Conducting data quality control/quality assurance checks; 
  • Assisting in public engagement effort and synthesizing community input; 
  • Assisting engineering staff with technical analysis, reporting, and presenting; and 
  • Reviewing, summarizing, and presenting data for publication (includes crash data, operational data, etc.).

We are seeking highly motivated individuals for exciting one-year Internships in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.

Internship

Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Key info:

  • The position is available to start employment beginning July 1, 2025.
  • This is not a fully remote opportunity, in-office hours are to be expected.
  • Interns are also expected to participate in both in-office work assignments as well as a member of the in-person training cohort.

Minimum:

Recent, 2024 and/or 2025 college graduates earning either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree* in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the internship must have:

  • No professional-level work experience (less than one year) in the internship field; and
  • Applicants who are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program related to the internship must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours.

Note: Any time lapse between earning degrees may not include significant professional-level work experience.

Degree Requirements: Transportation, Urban Planning, Environmental Sciences, Civil Engineering, Public Policy/Political Science, Computer Sciences, Information Technology or related discipline. Applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with an undergraduate degree no later than July 2025 and from candidates who are recently graduated or currently pursuing a Master's Degree in their field as described above.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred and applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts;
  • Transportation Planning;
  • Traffic data collection;
  • Data analysis; and/or
  • ESRI mapping/spatial analysis.

 

Special Requirements

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted.  It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Driver’s License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

 

Additional Information

Work Hours: This is a full-time position (40 hrs/week) Monday - Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm with some flexibility and telework opportunities available upon prior approval from the supervisor. This is not a fully remote opportunity. Employees will be expected to be in the office at the discretion of the Supervisor and needs of the agency as well as to attend in-person classroom training.
