Position Specific Summary

The Cloud Data Engineer position at the City of Tucson’s Information Technology Department (ITD) is responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing cloud-based systems and data lake solutions within the organization's technology ecosystem. This position involves managing key components to ensure seamless performance, scalability, and reliability across cloud environments.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Information Technology Administrator. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designs and implements scalable and secure cloud-based data lakes within the Amazon Web Services (AWS), ecosystem, leveraging Snowflake to optimize storage and performance for structured and semi-structured data. Develops data models, schemas, and storage architectures that ensure seamless data flow and integration between cloud services and legacy systems while aligning with organizational needs. Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including data engineers, and analysts, to ensure data systems meet business requirements and organizational standards.

  • Leads engineering efforts for system enhancements and cloud migration projects, transitioning from legacy on-premise systems to modern cloud-based platforms like Snowflake, Redshift, and Databricks. Designs and optimizes extract, transform, load (ETL) and extract, load, transform (ELT) processes to ensure seamless data ingestion, transformation, and loading from multiple sources. Identifies opportunities for process improvements and automation while aligning workflows with organizational goals.

  • Acts as the escalation point for identifying, diagnosing and resolving performance issues, data integration challenges, and infrastructure concerns. Resolves complex issues within the cloud, Apache tools, and database systems, ensuring seamless system integration. Implements data governance and security measures, ensuring compliance with industry standards and organizational policies.

  • Monitors Snowflake and related data environments to ensure system availability, performance, and reliability. Performs database engineering task such as tuning, query optimization, and capacity planning for cloud data systems. Manages backups, recovery strategies, and disaster recovery planning for mission-critical cloud-based data systems.

  • Creates and maintains comprehensive technical documentation, including architectural designs, data flow diagrams, and process documentation, for use by technical and non-technical stakeholders. Maintains runbooks and guides to facilitating knowledge transfer and operational handoffs. Documents lessons learned and best practices to guide future system designs.

  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned. Assists with special and related projects as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Bachelor's degree
Experience
Three (3) years of directly related experience
Equivalency
Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
Experience in cloud-based data architecture, including roles such as Snowflake Architect, Cloud Data Engineer, or Systems Engineer
Experience in cloud-native data warehousing and analytics platforms, such as Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Redshift, or Google BigQuery.
Hands-on experience with big data processing frameworks, including Apache Spark, Apache Kafka, and Apache Hadoop.
Experience with API integrations, including Representational State Transfer (REST) and Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) for data exchange between systems.
