Who We Are

HII is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Software Engineer to play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining critical system software components for the US Department of Defense (DoD) Joint Simulation Environment (JSE) at the Joint Integrated Test and Training Center – Nellis (JITTC-N), Nellis AFB, NV.

 

As part of a team providing on-site Modeling and Simulation (M&S) support to establish and deliver high-end Advanced Tactics, Training, and Test capability for Government personnel operating under USAFWC/ACC, this candidate will contribute to the development and maintenance of NAVAIR’s Next Generation Threat System (NGTS), a continually evolving synthetic environment generator that provides constructive entities to the battlespace simulation and supports multiple platform/services training, testing, analysis, and research and development. The Senior Software Engineer will leverage their expertise in C++/C, along with strong leadership and design skills, to enhance the functionality and integration of NGTS with other JSE components like GRID (Global Reusable Interface Domain) in a complex simulation and training environment. This role requires a deep understanding of software architecture, performance optimization, and the ability to mentor junior team members.

What You Will Do

Developing and maintaining software for an advanced synthetic training environment integrated into flight simulators to support pilot training against potential threats. Responsibilities include software development, integration, customer training, and demonstrations.

• Designs, develops, and implements complex software solutions using C++, Python 3, and Bash, adhering to best practices in object-oriented design and design patterns.

• Leads and participates in code reviews, ensuring code quality, maintainability, and adherence to coding standards.

• Develops and optimizes parallel processes, threading, and inter-process communication for enhanced performance.

• Manages and utilizes Git for daily code management, including advanced branching strategies, merging, conflict resolution, and release management within a collaborative development environment.

• Proficiently works with Git in both Bash (Linux) and Windows environments.

• Interacts with remote repositories, manages code merges and pull requests, and enforces version control best practices.

• Collaborates with team members to design and architect future system enhancements and improvements.

• Troubleshoots and resolves complex software issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.

• Mentors junior team members, providing technical guidance and support.

What You Must Have

• 9 years of C++ and software engineering experience with a Bachelors in CS/CE or a related Engineering, Math, or Physics field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience also considered (e.g., Masters + 7 years experience, Ph.D. + 3 years experience, or 13 years with High School Diploma/GED).

• Demonstrated expertise in C++ object-oriented software design, development, and debugging.

• Extensive experience working with Git version control system, including advanced branching strategies, merging, and conflict resolution.

• Proficiency working in a Linux command-line environment (Bash) and scripting.

• Strong understanding of software architecture principles and design patterns.

• Able to successfully manage multiple complex tasks and priorities.

• Excellent oral and written communication, troubleshooting, and organizational skills.

• Must be able to lead technical initiatives in a team environment.

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret clearance. 

• Must be a US citizen.

Bonus Points For...

• Experience with NGTS programming and architecture.

• Experience with GRID or GRID services and programming.

• Advanced scripting and programming experience in Python.

• Significant experience contributing to the system design or architecture of new and current systems.

• Experience with Agile software methodologies and leading Agile development teams.

• Deep understanding of Git internals and best practices for managing large codebases.

• Strong familiarity with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and advanced Linux commands.

• Experience supporting Special Access Program (SAP) efforts.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to present technical information clearly and concisely.

• Experience mentoring junior engineers.

Physical Requirements

May require working in an office, industrial, shipboard, or laboratory environment. Capable of climbing ladders and tolerating confined spaces and extreme temperature variances.
