Our challenge

We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer candidate will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for MongoDB and related NoSQL technologies. This role involves designing, modeling, and architecting databases, as well as implementing and managing data synchronization, aggregation, and migration processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong proficiency in Node.js for scripting, data loading, and building query builder APIs.

Additional Information* 

The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors.  In accordance with law, the base salary for this role if filled within Halifax, NS is CAD $100k – CAD $110k/year & benefits (see below).

The Role

Responsibilities:

  • Database Design & Architecture:
  • Design and model MongoDB and NoSQL databases to meet application and performance requirements.
  • Architect and implement SQL databases and Redis caches for optimal data retrieval and storage.
  • Data Management:
  • Develop and maintain data synchronization processes between different data sources and systems.
  • Implement data aggregation techniques to support analytics and reporting needs.
  • Data Migration:
  • Lead data migration efforts, ensuring data integrity and minimal downtime.
  • Utilize best practices to facilitate seamless transitions between databases.
  • Scripting & Automation:
  • Write and maintain scripts in Node.js to automate data loading processes and optimize database interactions.
  • Develop query builder APIs to enhance data accessibility for applications.
  • Collaboration & Mentorship:
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, data analysts, and business stakeholders, to understand data requirements and deliver solutions.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior data engineers, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
  • Performance Tuning & Optimization:
  • Monitor and optimize database performance, executing tuning and scaling initiatives as necessary.
  • Conduct regular database health checks and implement necessary improvements.
  • Documentation & Best Practices:
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of database architectures, processes, and procedures.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices in data engineering and database management.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with a focus on MongoDB and NoSQL databases.
  • Strong expertise in designing, modeling, and architecting databases, including SQL and Redis.
  • Proficient in Node.js for scripting, data loading, and API development.
  • Experience with data migration strategies and tools.
  • Knowledge of data synchronization and aggregation techniques.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong attention to detail.

Preferred, but not required:

  • Experience with data warehousing and ETL processes.
  • Understanding of big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and DevOps practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
