Job Description

Working with the AVP R&D, Australia this role will be responsible for actuarial research and development for the Protection business written in Australia by Pacific Life Re Australia (“PLRe Aus”), as well as Income Protection business written in other regions by Pacific Life Re. 


The purpose of the R&D function is to deliver cutting edge R&D that quantifies existing & future risks effectively to add material business value, and as part of the R&D Australia team you will play an important role in achieving this by materially contributing to a range of activities.  These include setting terms of trade, conducting experience analyses and calibrating risk distributions using superior data analytics techniques and novel data sets to deliver sustainable competitive advantage.


You will work with other teams (Claims, Pricing, Underwriting, Client Solutions, Strategic Analytics) and conduct actuarial research projects across all the company’s current and planned product lines:  mortality, TPD, trauma, income protection, within both the group and retail markets, as well as income protection products for other regions.


You will also work with R&D teams in other regions to support the development and maintenance of global frameworks, processes and best practice approaches.

R&D Actuary Responsibilities
•    Materially contributes to the development and production of experience studies across the company’s in-force treaties by extracting, manipulating and analysing data alongside making basis recommendations and presenting in Committees
•    Materially contributes to the development of both Terms of Trade and Quantifying Insurance Risk assumptions through the regular maintenance and development of vital data, model production and cutting-edge innovation
•    Effectively coaches junior team members and provides training to other team members
•    Produces well written reports and documentation without supervision and reviews work from junior colleagues
•    Excellent knowledge of guidelines and policies, ensuring that they are adhered to
•    Constructively challenges current practices and continuously improves processes and documentation
•    Highly effective communication skills, ensuring appropriate stakeholder management within the R&D team and reporting to key stakeholders across the company
•    Has a wide understanding of the markets that the business operates in and the risks to which it is exposed and the models we use to develop assumptions as well as an appreciation of the competitive position and business strategy


Qualifications & Experience


Essential:
•    FIAA or equivalent status
•    3+ years’ experience in roles involving actuarial experience analysis (e.g. pricing, research, or annual experience investigations)
•    Strong understanding of actuarial principles and processes
•    Strong analytical and communication skills
•    Places a high value on innovation and continuous improvement
•    Enthusiastic, with a keen drive and focus
•    Business awareness
•    Good organisational skills

Desirable:
•    Experience in systems such as SQL, Tableau, R, and Python
•    Experience/knowledge of actuarial techniques such as Generalised Linear Models and Survival Models
•    Experience/knowledge of machine learning techniques and data science
•    Previous work history based in life insurance, particularly individual risk portfolios
