About the role
The Research Data Specialist will work closely with EMBO to advance the implementation of open data initiatives and open science practices in the life sciences. As part of the Springer Nature Research Data Team and working in consultation with EMBO’s Head of Open Science Implementation, this position will coordinate activities between EMBO and Springer Nature to support common goals and identify technical solutions and processes that improve the scalability of open data sharing and discovery.
This role has a large focus on AI-assisted automation of data processes and tools to support authors and editors, improving the curation, review and sharing of Research Data to relevant standards.
Responsibilities:
- Automation of Research Data and Open Science processes at EMBO and SN journals, including prompt engineering for large language models and the development of the respective open source benchmarks for AI-assisted data curation, review and sharing
- Work on the integration of Open Science tools developed by EMBO and SN, and identifying challenges and user issues, tailoring solutions to user needs
- Providing Research Data expertise to technical and product teams involved in tool development at EMBO and SN, editors and publishers, supporting the implementation of new data tools and solutions
- Improve the handling of research data in relevant systems (for example peer review systems, article page platforms and data repositories) through technical guidance and support
- Helping to define and apply relevant metrics to evaluate the success, adoption and impact of the EMBO and SN Open Science tools
- Coordinate with data curation and open science activities at EMBO and Springer Nature, identifying shared goals and standards
- Participate in research data conferences, working groups and other events in the community
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
Experience:
- Experience in research data management or data publishing at an academic institution or publisher
- Demonstrated expertise in data and metadata curation
- Experience with AI-based workflows
- Experience with editorial and publishing workflows
Skills/Knowledge:
- Passionate about data sharing, open access and open research
- Demonstrable understanding of scientific research, via a bachelor degree or postgraduate qualification
- Demonstrable understanding of the peer review process
- Demonstrable ability to development and measure the efficiency and impact of workflows
- Excellent project management, organisational and coordination skills
- Demonstrable understanding of research data management, data curation or data stewardship, including an informed view on potential future developments, innovations and improvements
- Demonstrable understanding of the technical issues associated with data curation, metadata standards and deposition.

Qualifications
- Degree in the life sciences
- Relevant postgraduate qualifications or experience
The position is offered in Heidelberg, based on a hybrid working pattern and, on a fix-term contract for 12 months.
