Department Overview

Rakuten Institute of Technology (RIT) https://rit.rakuten.com, the core AI research wing of Rakuten, is spread across six geographical locations including Tokyo, Singapore, Boston, San Mateo, Bengaluru, and Paris. This division consists of AI research scientists with specialization in machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, knowledge discovery and data mining.

As part of our research at the Rakuten Institute of Technology, Responsible AI is one of the primary focuses. Through collaboration with all AI-related stakeholders, our objective is to enhance the safety, fairness, and transparency of AI within the Rakuten Group. 

Our activities encompass the following:

- Developing guidelines for AI construction and evaluation

- Establishing AI evaluation tools and processes

- Researching on AI safety, fairness, bias, transparency, and explainability

- Educating internal stakeholders about Responsible AI initiatives

Position Details

- Clarifying and resolving issues related to Responsible AI 

- Promoting the development of guidelines and tools for Responsible AI, communicating with stakeholders, and spreading initiatives throughout the company 

- Considering the short to medium term direction of Responsible AI 

- Collaborating with development team members to develop and implement AI evaluation tools 

- Supporting other researchers from the perspective of Responsible AI 

- Cultivating junior-level researchers 

- Reviewing and evaluating AI evaluation tools provided by external vendors 

- Contributing to the advancement of science through writing papers, attending conferences, and submitting patent proposals

Mandatory Qualifications:

- Doctoral degree in computer science, mathematics, physics or equivalent practical experience

- Strong publication record in machine learning, Responsible AI, and related research fields, or experience in productizing research outcomes in an industry

- Expertise and practical experience in the evaluation methods of AI, bias, and explainability

- Fluency in English and ability to communicate effectively with researchers, engineers, and business/legal/governance-related people

- Strong programming experience in one or more of the following: Python, R, Scala, Java, C, C++

- Self-motivated and willing to take on challenges in new technologies, research problems, and services

- Strong interest in responsible AI

Desired Qualifications:

- Passionate about contributing to businesses by applying innovative solutions to real-world problems

- 2 or more years of experience leading research team

- Experience in development with Unix/Linux

- Ability to effectively communicate with business personnel in Japanese

- Ability to write and understand Japanese documents
