JOB SUMMARY

The Data Management Engineer plays a critical role in supporting the Technology Department at Simmons by ensuring the integrity, security, and accessibility of institutional data. This position involves managing student, faculty, research, and administrative data while adhering to compliance regulations and supporting institutional decision-making through accurate data reporting and governance.


 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Database Management: Manage and maintain institutional databases (e.g., Student Information Systems, Learning Management Systems, ERP systems) to ensure data accuracy and efficiency.

  • Data Integration: Collaborate with Technology teams to integrate data across multiple platforms, including cloud-based systems (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) and third-party applications.

  • Reporting & Analytics: Develop dashboards and reports for university leadership, academic departments, and administrative offices using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or SQL-based reporting solutions.

  • Application Support: Troubleshoot challenges and/or difficulties users have with applications and coordinate support requests to software vendors as needed.

  • Security & Access Control: Ensure appropriate access controls and security measures are in place to protect sensitive student and institutional data.

  • Data Cleaning & Validation: Monitor and improve data quality by identifying inconsistencies and implementing validation processes.

  • Data Governance & Compliance: Maintain data governance policies to ensure compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and other regulatory requirements.

  • Support Research & Institutional Effectiveness: Assist faculty, researchers, and institutional effectiveness teams with data extraction and analysis for academic and administrative research purposes.

  • User Training & Support: Provide training and support to faculty, staff, and students on data management best practices and reporting tools.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Information Technology, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • 3 - 5 years experience with database and cloud based systems 

  • Experience with higher education data systems, preferably Workday.

  • Proficiency in SQL, Python, or other database query languages for data extraction and manipulation.

  • Experience with a cloud-based data warehouse, preferably Snowflake

  • Knowledge of educational data standards (IPEDS, NCES, etc.) and compliance regulations (FERPA, HIPAA).

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in data visualization tools like Tableau, Power BI, or Google Data Studio.

  • Excellent communication, documentation, and collaboration skills to work effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, and IT teams.
  • Demonstrated competency with AI and machine learning concepts, particularly in relation to data management, query optimization, and integration with modern data platforms.

  • Detail-oriented, with the ability to problem solve data inconsistencies and work with large data sets


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with cloud-based data solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) is a plus.
