Taxonomist

We are seeking an experienced taxonomist to support strategic planning, design, and implementation of taxonomies and ontologies to support labeling, categorization, machine learning, content understanding, navigation, and analytics at Meta. This work spans multiple domains and will include extending and updating existing taxonomies and ontologies to support evolving use cases as well as growing a taxonomy for new products, while integrating it into a broader taxonomy/ontology infrastructure. The work also includes following taxonomy management best practices, metadata and vocabulary standards, and building cross-functional relationships.

Our ideal candidate will have a background in taxonomy and ontology development, data analysis, and cross-functional collaboration. This person will be expected to update and expand knowledge domains while collaborating with data consumers.Taxonomist Responsibilities

• Understand industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices and use this understanding to innovate and influence models, user experiences, and taxonomy development.
• Consult with internal product partners to expand our taxonomy to support product and business goals while remaining faithful to underlying structures.
• Contribute to improvements across the taxonomy function at Meta

Minimum Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in developing taxonomies/or ontologies to support a variety of systems both for front-end and back-end use.
• Experience with evaluating and implementing taxonomies to support systems such as search systems, content management systems, digital asset management systems, or product classification.
• Experience with a NLP, ML, GenAI, computational linguistics, or related fields.
• Experience communicating and presenting taxonomy principles and standards.
• Experience with a variety of topic/domain types and complexity of taxonomies.
• Experience with systems and business analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Library Science, Information Management, or Computational Linguistics
• Experience with scripting language such as Python, or query languages such as SQL and SPARQL
• Experience with taxonomy management tools and platforms
• Familiarity with data science and machine learning concepts, including data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation
• Experience using Gen AI tools to assist in taxonomy development

$118,000/year to $167,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits

Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus, equity or sales incentives, if applicable.
