We are seeking a Remote Sensing Group Lead who will focus on leading talented R&D professionals and establish them as a premier R&D organization by setting a vision, developing a research strategy to achieve that vision, and enabling true impact on critical national security missions through a team-based approach and commitment to excellence. 

 

This position resides in the Geographic Data Science Section, Geospatial Science and Human Security Division, National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as immediate supervisor for staff members in group (approximately 8-12 staff).
  • Ensure ORNL scientists/engineers continue to be recognized leaders in their area of technical expertise.
  • Initiate, lead and perform independent and impactful R&D on an ongoing basis as evidenced by, for example, innovative S&T delivered to sponsors, successful proposals, S&T presentations, professional community engagement, inventions/patents/copyrights, publications as appropriate, etc.
  • Develop a vision and implement a cohesive group research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects to position the group for future success.
  • Develop and implement plans to exploit new opportunities and/or expand existing efforts.
  • Assist staff in setting performance goals consistent with the group’s strategy and members’ long-term career goals. Provide feedback to address performance issues in a timely manner.
  • Provide relevant input to assist the R&D Section Head with staff development while providing direct and impactful guidance to staff on regular basis.

  • Lead by example by exercising scientific integrity in proposing, performing, and communicating research.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. with a minimum of 6 years relevant experience, a M.S. with a minimum of 12 years experience, or a B.S. with 15 years of experience and a focus on photogrammetry, image science, remote sensing, geomatics, civil engineering, geography, computational sciences, physics, mathematics or related fields.
  • Experience programming in scientific programming languages.
  • Experience with a portfolio of commercial and public EO satellite, airborne, and terrestrial sensors and data (both active & passive).
  • Demonstrated publication track record in remote sensing and photogrammetric related research areas.
  • Experience using production tools related to remote sensing and/or photogrammetry such as ESRI ArcGIS Suite, SOCET GXP, ENVI and similar open-source tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated leadership ability and a strong commitment to a teaming environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Past hands-on involvement in significant photogrammetry, computer vision, geomatics, image science, remote sensing, or geospatial projects.
  • Experience programming in scientific programming languages such as Julia, Python, Scala, R, C/C++.
  • Hands-on experience with high-performance computing environments including software and research deployment in cloud environments and edge devices.
  • Demonstrated track record in national and/or international engagements that seek to sustain and strengthen the geographic data science R&D community.
  • Experience working for or collaborating with DOE National Laboratories, academic institutions, other research organizations and the private sector.
  • Highly motivated to learn new topics and skills and develop innovative products for our customers.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.  In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
