Joby Overview

Located in Northern California, the team at Joby Aviation is driven by our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a Staff Fleet Reliability Engineer to champion the operational reliability of our groundbreaking eVTOL aircraft fleet. In this senior role, you will lead critical efforts to ensure the safety, performance, and readiness of our fleet through data-driven insights and cross-functional collaboration.

As a Staff Fleet Reliability Engineer, you will leverage your expertise to monitor fleet health, analyze performance trends, and implement solutions that enhance aircraft availability and long-term reliability. You will also play a pivotal role in shaping our reliability strategy and mentoring junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.

We’re looking for a highly motivated, results-oriented professional with deep expertise in aircraft systems and a proven track record in fleet reliability engineering. If you are passionate about aviation, thrive in dynamic environments, and enjoy solving complex problems collaboratively, we’d love to hear from you.

Location: 2-3 days in Marina, CA to collaborate with the Flight Test, Operations and Maintenance team, other days flexible between Santa Cruz or San Carlos locations.

Responsibilities

Fleet Performance Monitoring:

  • Lead in the analysis of operational data to monitor and report key reliability metrics including dispatch reliability, scheduled/unscheduled maintenance events, inspection intervals, and component performance trends from Flight Test or Flight Operations.
  • Aggregate and interpret data from maintenance and engineering systems, performing advanced statistical analyses to evaluate and enhance operational and technical performance.
  • Develop and oversee dashboards and visualizations that effectively communicate fleet health status to stakeholders across Engineering & Maintenance Programs, Maintenance, Materials, Quality, Flight Operations, and In-Flight Services.

Reliability Analysis and Reporting:

  • Drive root cause and trend analyses using technical data from aircraft maintenance logs, service records, health monitoring systems, and operational feedback.
  • Lead investigations into component, module, system, and aircraft-level failures, recommending and validating corrective actions to improve reliability and reduce downtime.
  • Prepare, present, and advocate for data-driven reliability reports, offering clear insights and actionable recommendations to executive and technical audiences.
  • Translate reliability findings into engineering modifications or repair documentation that support fleet-wide technical dispatch reliability goals.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, maintenance, and supply chain teams to identify and implement design changes, procedural improvements, and training initiatives that elevate reliability performance.
  • Serve as a technical authority providing critical field performance feedback to design and certification teams to inform product improvements and future design iterations.

Predictive Maintenance:

  • Lead the development and implementation of predictive maintenance strategies, leveraging data analytics and machine learning techniques to anticipate and mitigate failures.
  • Identify leading indicators of failure and establish predictive models that support proactive maintenance planning.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure all reliability engineering activities align with FAA and relevant aviation regulatory standards.
  • Maintain rigorous documentation and traceability to support compliance, airworthiness certification, and regulatory reporting.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Act as a senior liaison between field operations, engineering, and leadership teams to align reliability goals with organizational priorities.
  • Provide expert technical support to field maintenance teams, especially during complex or high-impact scenarios.

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering (or a related discipline), with 8+ years of industry experience in reliability engineering, root cause failure analysis, and field performance analytics in a relevant, safety-critical domain.
  • Recognized as a subject matter expert in fleet reliability, with hands-on experience in aviation maintenance programs, CASS (Continuous Analysis and Surveillance Systems), and maintenance engineering operations, ensuring operational continuity and regulatory compliance.
  • Proficient in Python, Databricks SQL, and Power BI, with the ability to develop and maintain advanced dashboards, scripts, and data pipelines to support real-time reliability monitoring and analysis.
  • Demonstrated strength in cross-functional communication and collaboration, with the ability to influence technical decisions and drive alignment across engineering, maintenance, and operational teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a high level of rigor and attention to detail applied to system-level data and failure trend analysis.
  • Experience conducting Design for Reliability (DfR) for complex electro-mechanical systems such as energy storage systems and propulsion technologies.

Desired

  • Prior experience in developing and managing aircraft reliability metrics and maintenance dashboards, supporting both operational and engineering teams.
  • Proven capability in hardware diagnostics and troubleshooting, including coordination with design, test, and maintenance teams to escalate and resolve systemic issues.
  • Solid grounding in system performance analytics, with experience in initiating corrective and preventive actions based on field data trends.
  • Knowledge and practical experience with reliability engineering tools and methodologies such as Weibull analysis, sample size estimation, and reliability growth modeling.
  • Familiarity with key aviation components and systems, including actuators, motors, inverters, pumps, and batteries, with an understanding of their reliability drivers.
  • Working knowledge of industry standards related to reliability and hardware assessment such as MIL-STD, JEDEC, IPC, and IEC.
