We, the BMW Group, offer you an interesting and varied master's thesis in the area of urban assisted driving. In the realm of assisted driving, understanding and optimizing the customer experience in urban areas is crucial for the development of L2/L2+ assisted driving technologies. This master thesis will focus on developing a methodology to evaluate facial expressions and statistically analyze the data in conjunction with subjective user experience (UX) feedback. The goal is to find a correlation between facial expressions and UX feedback in urban driving scenarios.

 

What awaits you?    

  • Conduct a comprehensive literature review to understand the state-of-the-art (SOTA) techniques in facial expression analysis and their applications in user experience quantification.
  • Collect front face images during driving simulator experiments to create a robust dataset for facial expression evaluation.
  • Label and preprocess the collected facial images to prepare the data for model training, ensuring high-quality and consistent annotations.
  • Develop and implement machine learning models for facial expression recognition, focusing on accuracy and computational performance.
  • Train and validate the models using the collected dataset, employing various techniques to enhance model performance and reliability.
  • Apply statistical analysis to correlate facial expression data with subjective UX feedback, providing a comprehensive understanding of user experience.


Please note that your thesis must be supervised by a university on your part.  

 

What should you bring along?  

  • Strong understanding of machine learning and computer vision techniques.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, and familiarity with machine learning libraries (e.g., PyTorch, PyTorch Lightning).
  • Experience with Linux.
  • Experience with data collection, labeling, and preprocessing techniques.
  • Knowledge of facial expression recognition and UX analysis methods is a plus.
  • Strong statistical analytics skills and the ability to draw meaningful conclusions from experimental data.
  • Strong communication abilities.
