Role Profile

The Global Head of Data Engineering will report directly to the Global Chief Data Officer of AIG. The role will be responsible for building scalable, high-performance data platforms that support advanced analytics and business intelligence needs in alignment with AIG’s strategic data objectives.  In addition, this position will have technology development and delivery accountability for strategic data initiatives across AIG.

The role will oversee a global team, ensuring alignment with business objectives, regulatory compliance and technological advancements.  The role will define the data engineering technical architecture, the talent and staffing strategy, and the overall delivery methodology in partnership with the AIG Data Office leadership team.  The role will also partner with peers and leaders across AIG IT on managing the data engineering technology stack, managing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of both legacy and modern data assets, and coordinating data efforts across AIG technology teams. 

The responsibilities for this role include:

  • Design and implement a repeatable delivery methodology for developing modern cloud-based data analytics capabilities at scale and with speed to market.
  • Drive innovation by evaluating and implementing emerging technologies in cloud computing, data pipelines and AI driven automation.
  • Manage the development, support and maintenance of a 90+ application portfolio.
  • Maintain and enhance the financial month-end close data processes, ensuring timely, accurate and secure movement of critical financial data.
  • Establish and enforce robust reconciliation and control mechanisms for data pipelines to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency of critical data assets, including automated data validation, anomaly detection and remediation of discrepancies.
  • Lead and oversee the execution of complex data delivery projects, managing project timelines, stakeholder expectations and cross-functional collaboration across data engineering, IT and business teams.
  • Own and manage the fiscal budget for business-as-usual (BAU) professional services and software / platform licensing, ensuring optimization of resources across the application portfolio.
  • Be responsible for and the custodian of the long-term technical strategy including managing and forecasting total cost of ownership of the data modernization efforts combined with legacy data platforms.
  • Lead solution architecture/design decisions for data initiatives and overall data technology architecture for AIG.
  • Serve as the key lead and point of contact with the broader AIG IT organization, ensuring alignment with broader initiatives and priorities.
  • Expected to Rrecommend innovations and improvements to data engineering delivery capabilities. Adapts plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges.
  • Serves as a Subject Matter Expert for AIG and AIG Stakeholders in the field of Data Engineering.
  • Full responsibility and accountability for the development of operational plans that transfer strategy to execution of the Data initiatives across the AIG enterprise.
  • Role is accountable for leading data engineers/managers across AIG’s data portfolios.
  • Responsible for fostering and maintaining maintenance of relationships with executive level business and IT partners. In addition, own overall relationships with key vendor partners.
  • Manage a large team of FTEs and managed service partners globally.
  • Drive team recruiting, training and talent assessment.
  • Serve as competency leader in the data engineering space responsible for career development and growth of employees across multiple teams./teams
  • Lead a team of professionals.  Inspire and motivate the team, as well as peers and the broader organization, establishing a presence as a collaborative and inclusive leader, who engenders organizational trust and alignment.  Lead through example, demonstrating a global mindset and openness to a diversity of perspectives.

Key Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of modern data architectures, including data lakes, data warehouses, lakehouses and virtualization
  • Extensive experience designing and implementing ELT/ETL data pipelines using industry standard technologies including AWS Services, Spark, Snowflake, Informatica and Palantir
  • Proven ability to manage global service providers to deliver in the best interest of the organization, establish relationships with vendor partners that enable flexibility, scale and high delivery quality
  • Experience implementing data observability, lineage and reconciliation frameworks to ensure high data reliability and accuracy
  • Experience managing a global data application portfolio, defining strategy for and executing on legacy modernization initiatives
  • Demonstrated success in forecasting and managing multi-million- dollar IT budgets for data engineering, cloud services, software licensing and operational expenses
  • Strong stakeholder management skills to communicate complex technical concepts to business executives
  • Proven ability to negotiate priorities across competing demands, driving alignment between technical teams and business stakeholders
  • Significant experience leading data integration delivery team in large, complex insurance, financial or similar companies
  • Proven success leading mid to large size technology organizations, optimizing resource capacity and upskilling talent
  • Working knowledge of data science concepts, as well as master data management, business intelligence, data warehouse design, and implementation techniques.
  • Experience in providing technical expertise and project leadership by conducting industry and market research and making recommendations regarding current and new domain knowledge and related technologies.
  • Ability to understand the long-term ("big picture") and short-term perspectives of situations.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to negotiate outcomes that balance business speed to market with appropriate controls and governance
  • Strong program and project management skills and experience
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and with changing priorities.

Ideal Experience

  • 20+ years of experience in information management / data integration with at least 10 years in progressive leadership roles focused on data engineering
  • Experience in Property and Casualty insurance or adjacent financial services environments
  • Demonstrated experience designing and building information assets in modern data technology platforms including Cloud (AWS, Azure, Snowflake, Spark) based solutions
  • Experience implementing data security, governance and compliance frameworks
  • Experience leading an organization and teams through change, improving efficiency, reducing cost and/or integrating business units or capabilities 
  • Experience in developing and operationalizing strategy, including data, technology and infrastructure

Location & Mobility

  • Position will be based in the Atlanta, GA or Charlotte, NC area
  • Travel potential up to 25%
