The Team: The Transactions Data Warehouse team at Zillow is a member of the Analytics Data Engineering organization and works closely with product, analytics, and AI teams. Your work will have a direct impact on the design and implementation of data engineering solutions that improve the efforts of our AI, Marketing, and Data Science teams, thus enhancing Zillow's offerings for customers. This dedicated team is vital in supporting Zillow's Premier Agent, Agent Software and Advertising, and Zillow Home Loans business areas.

We are seeking a highly skilled and transformative Principal Software Development Engineering (Big Data) to join our team. As a principal engineer, you will be responsible for working with data platform, product engineering, Data Science, AI, and other partner teams to influence data strategy, architecture, and project roadmaps to increase the output of our data engineering team. You will define and implement architectural best practices across the team and organization, ensuring that there is a consistent data strategy across the our team and broader organization.

About the role

The Transactions Data Warehouse team is looking for a Principal SDE to lead data initiatives needs across the Premier Agent, Zillow Home Loans, and Agent Software and Advertising domains. In this role, you will set architectural standards for data products across our team and broader Data Engineering organization. You will also own the effort to build out a connected Data Warehouse - working with senior engineers and leaders to ensure that data products are designed to not only solve for our stakeholders’ immediate business needs but fit together to represent a view of Zillow’s customers as they interact with products across business lines

The ideal candidate is someone with a background in Data Engineering who has a consistent track record of building and operating high-impact data solutions. They are someone who can translate customer needs into strong data engineering solutions. They are also able to drive clarity for others in the face of ambiguous problems and are able to set the correct levels of priorities and areas of investment for the team.

You Will Get To:

  • Architect and design scalable, efficient, and robust data products that support high performance and availability.
  • Establish and enforce coding and architectural standards for data pipeline development to ensure high quality and maintainability.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to define data strategies and ensure alignment with business objectives.
  • Guide and mentor a team of mid-level to senior data engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation within the team
  • Influence architectural decisions around data ingestion, data transformations, data discoverability and data consistency across our team’s data products
  • Provide regular updates and reports on data architecture health, performance, and improvement opportunities.
     

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.

In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $186,700.00 - $298,300.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC and may not be applicable to other locations.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.

Who you are

  • 10+ years of experience in Data Engineering.
  • Proven experience as a senior or principal data engineer in large scale data environments.
  • 4+ years experience in data architecture, data modeling, or related fields.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL, NoSQL databases, and data warehousing solutions.
  • Experience with cloud-based data solutions (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
  • Technical Skills – AWS, Spark, Airflow, SQL , databricks, Data Modeling, Databricks
  • An ability to work with partners across the organization and develop the right prioritization frameworks.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Soft Skills – Presenting, Storytelling, Communicating
