Technical Facilities Gas & Chemical Engineer
Description
Requires specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise. Interprets internal or external business issues and recommends best practices. Solves complex problems; takes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions. Works independently, with guidance in only the most complex situations. May lead functional teams or projects.
Key Responsibilities
This is a Technical Facilities Engineer position. This position is to provide technical leadership in the planning, design, configuration, construction, commissioning, operations, and maintenance of Gas & Chemical systems
Job Responsibilities:
- Candidate involved in the startup and commissioning of a new greenfield semiconductor fab and will be expected to be able to do the following:
- Read and understand design/construction drawings for the facility and the facility’s gas & chemical systems
- Read and understand equipment submittals and vendor documentation for gas & chemical equipment, including those for specialty gas systems, bulk gas systems, bulk specialty gas systems, bulk liquid chemical systems, and organic precursor liquid delivery systems.
- Inspect gas & chemical installations as construction progresses and verify that construction is proceeding in accordance with the design/construction drawings.
- Respond to RFI’s (Requests for Information) which may arise during construction and provide input to resolve any issues related to the gas & chemical systems.
- Provide input and participate in startup and commissioning of the site’s gas & chemical systems
- Participate in developing, participating in, and signing off on Operational Acceptance Tests (OATs) and Functional Acceptance Tests (FATs) for gas & chemical systems.
- Be able to work and coordinate with other project team members and disciplines to resolve any issues during construction.
- Similarly understand the design/operation of the SCADA monitoring system for gas & chemical systems and participate in the startup and commissioning of that system
- Provide technical direction to design engineers throughout the project conceptual design phase, interface with site user groups, other engineering disciplines, local municipalities and/or utilities, trade contractors, and other project stakeholders as required
- Review and approve building construction, fit-up and tool hook-up designs
- Obtain funding and manage projects per scope, schedule & budget
- Ensure that Gas & Chemical systems operate to design specifications
- Develop effective process design deliverables to support all aspects of conceptual design
- Effectively interact with several internal engineering organizations to influence design standards, construction specifications, and operations requirements to ensure these enable construction to meet its Review and approve Chem Auth and MOC
- Coordinate with multiple groups (planning, construction, safety, GLSS service provider, building owners, management, etc.) to meet project or service request requirement and minimize system downtime and business interruptions
- Manage engineering & design team multiple projects of varying complexity
- Take various levels of responsibility for, and participation in the development of, project scope, budget, and schedule
- Respond to business interruptions or internal customer escalations
- Perform problem solving, troubleshooting, root cause analysis using 8D methodology
- Evaluate system capacities and capabilities and make improvement recommendations
- Identify and conceptually scope safety, compliance, capacity, redundancy, and cost savings projects
- Review operation, maintenance, trouble shooting, project commissioning & acceptance, and other related documents for facilities systems; recommend and implement improvements
Functional Knowledge
- Must have in-depth understanding of gas & chemical systems used in the semiconductor industry, including equipment and distribution systems for specialty gases, bulk gases, bulk specialty gases, bulk liquid chemicals, organic precursor liquids
- Must have a detailed understanding of construction specifications and construction techniques for high purity gas & chemical systems for the semiconductor industry, including start up and commissioning of such systems.
- Must be able to read and understand construction drawings, especially related to gas & chemical systems, and be able to verify in the field that the systems are being constructed and installed in accordance with the design drawings
- Must be able to provide engineering assistance as needed if issues arise in the field during construction and be able to develop solutions.
- Understanding of SCADA systems used for the monitoring of Gas & Chemical equipment.
- Demonstrates depth and/or breadth of expertise in own specialized discipline or field

Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical / Chemical Engineering
- 15+ years of semiconductor or high purity hazardous gas facilities management experience; or equivalent experience of more than 10 years of semiconductor gas facilities management
Additional qualifications include:
- Working experience as a facilities engineer in semiconductor industry
- Industrial gas and chemical delivery experience or equivalent
- Working knowledge of gas distribution system and PLC based controls systems
- Knowledge of local Fire, Building and Environmental codes
- Strong analytical skills and knowledge of SPC, 8D, DMAIC, FMEA and other tools
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Foreign language capability a plus
- Experience with MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, AutoCAD, SCADA (e.g. GE Cimplicity), CAFM (e.g. IBM TRIRIGA), and CMMS (e.g.IBM Maximo)
- Ability to work effectively as an individual with minimal direction, and as part of a larger multi-functional team
- Must have in-depth understanding of gas & chemical systems used in the semiconductor industry, including equipment and distribution systems for specialty gases, bulk gases, bulk specialty gases, bulk liquid chemicals, organic precursor liquids
