VP, Data Governance & Innovation Leader

The Opportunity

The North America Data Organization is responsible for developing and implementing organizational data strategy, leading data and analytics capabilities to enable better business outcomes, and driving productization and innovation of data usage across QBE NA. The team ensures that QBE NA leverages data as a driver for business value enablement through effective collaboration across our business and functional teams.

The VP, Data Governance & Innovation Leader will lead a team of experts responsible for development, implementation and oversight of data governance processes, standards, and policies to enhance data innovation practices and mitigate data risks across QBE NA. This leader will ensure successful implementation and continued optimization of a best-in-class data governance innovation program – with a bias toward next generation capabilities, automation and use of privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs). This leader will partner closely NA Risk and Legal (Privacy) teams, along with Group Data, Privacy, Risk and QBE Ventures teams to execute against this mandate and ensure alignment between the NA Data Governance Program and Group level obligations. This role is expected to challenge business and functional teams to think differently – and should actively position data governance as an essential design tool for innovation. This role will report directly to QBE NA’s Head of Data, and will be a member of the NA Data Leadership Team.

Primary Responsibilities

•Operationalize, own and continuously optimize the NA Data Governance Program – including the management of the recently launched NA AI Governance Policy – working closely with Divisional Data, Risk and Group Data and Risk teams. Ensure that efforts in this space yield practical approaches to support the achievement of Divisional business priorities – instead of “academic” or “aspirational” exercises

• Assess existing data practices and jointly develop a Divisional data governance program for newly restructured NA business model

• Partner with NA Data, business and functional teams to review and improve data inventory, data lineage, data classification/categorization, and data filtering

• Provide guidance and requirements when improvement of practices or technology platforms is necessary to meet data governance and data risk mitigation objectives

• Partner with others within the NA Data and Risk teams to identify control points and develop control structures for governance processes, as well as implement processes to manage program updates

• Manage a work queue of issues for both new and ongoing efforts and escalate any data risk issues/ requests seeking variances to senior executive management for review and approval

• Provide governance subject matter expertise across the data delivery and integration processes for projects to ensure data is being governed properly

• Partner closely with NA Data leadership, IT delivery, Enterprise Architecture and QBE Ventures teams to drive the data governance innovation agenda – including the adoption of next-generation capabilities, automation and privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs)

• Facilitate forums (including digital resource hubs) to communicate governance practices and principles to improve data literacy and compliance

• Serve as a data-driven change agent and advocate, persuading and influencing the organization at the grassroots level on the importance of governance as enabler of responsible data innovation.

Required Education:

• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience

Required Experience:

• 10+ years relevant experience

Preferred Competencies/Skills

• Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills; able to demonstrate executive presence and lead through influence across all levels of the organization

• Ability to translate strategic objectives from across Divisional business and functional teams into data governance requirements and best practices that enable innovation while balancing current and future data risk

• Extensive experience in overall data governance, data management, data privacy, data strategy, data platform development, and data integration

• Experience with adoption of privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs)

• Significant experience working with business teams, technical and risk teams to design, build and deliver business-critical data solutions

• Comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty, ability work in a fast-paced environment as a hands-on data leader

• Project Management and Delivery skills (project planning and tracking; issue identification and management; project status reporting)

Compensation Package: The salary range for this role is provided above. The salary offer will be decided based on the role's complexity, its location, and the candidate’s professional background, including their education and experience. Beyond the base salary, regular full-time and part-time employees will also be eligible for QBE’s annual discretionary bonus plan based on business and individual performance.
