The Role
As a Principal Data Scientist specializing in Storms, you will leverage remote sensing technologies and data to analyze, monitor, and assess the risks and impacts associated with severe weather events. Your expertise will be instrumental in supporting disaster response, mitigation, and recovery efforts by delivering actionable insights from satellite imagery, aerial data, and other remote sensing sources. In this role, you will collaborate closely with data science and analytics teams to develop AI/ML and statistical models for comprehensive risk and impact assessments.

How you'll make an impact:

  • Lead the development of storm catastrophe models, including hurricanes, thunderstorms, winter storms, and other severe weather events
  • Build hazard models by running simulations across diverse geographic regions to estimate the severity and intensity of storm impacts
  • Design and implement risk and impact models to assess potential losses resulting from storm events
  • Develop and apply methodologies for analyzing remote sensing data to extract key variables for storm modeling
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate storm risk outputs into actionable solutions for real-world business challenges
  • Plan and execute field surveys and ground-truth data collection strategies to validate and improve model accuracy

What we're looking for:

  • Deep expertise in developing a wide range of storm models, including hurricanes, thunderstorms, winter storms, and other extreme weather events
  • Proven experience in building hazard models through storm simulations to assess potential severity and intensity
  • Strong background in developing risk and impact models to quantify financial losses resulting from storm-related events
  • Extensive experience applying AI/ML, statistical, and time-series methodologies to build catastrophic risk models
  • Master’s or PhD in Remote Sensing, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Nice to have: Experience applying storm risk models within the utility sector

What you'll love:

  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage: 100% coverage for employees and 80% for their spouses and children
  • Health Reimbursement Account (HRA): 100% funded by AiDASH to cover medical deductibles
  • 401(k) Plan: Begin contributing after three months of employment to prepare for your future. Currently, no company match is offered
  • Parental Leave: Supportive parental leave with 16 weeks for primary caregivers and 4 weeks for secondary caregivers
  • Generous Vacation Policy: Accrue 20 vacation days per year, plus enjoy an additional flex holiday to celebrate whatever feels most important to you!
  • Winter Break: From December 25th through January 2nd, we give everyone time off to recharge and enjoy time with family and friends!
