As a Manager of Data Engineering in Global Logistics at Amazon, you will lead a team of talented engineers while driving the development and implementation of data strategies that propel our organization forward. This leadership role combines high-level strategic thinking with people management, requiring you to guide your team in translating architectural vision into tactical execution.

A day in the life
As a Manager of Data Engineering, your days are dynamic and diverse, adapting to the evolving needs of your team and the organization. You'll often start by touching base with your team leads, addressing any urgent issues and aligning priorities. Throughout the day, you might find yourself guiding architectural decisions in design reviews, collaborating with cross-functional partners to align data strategies with business goals, or diving into resource planning to ensure your team's efforts are optimally allocated.

A significant portion of your time is dedicated to people management – conducting one-on-ones with team members, mentoring rising leaders, and working on career development plans. You'll regularly engage in strategic discussions with peer managers and senior leadership, advocating for your team's initiatives and showcasing the impact of your data engineering efforts on Amazon's global logistics operations.

When needed, you step in to help solve complex technical challenges, leveraging your expertise to guide your team through difficult problems. You also play a crucial role in hiring and team growth, participating in interviews and making key decisions to build a diverse and high-performing team.

Whether you're reviewing project proposals, fine-tuning data governance policies, or preparing for an executive presentation, your focus remains on driving innovation, fostering team development, and ensuring the delivery of scalable, efficient data solutions that power Amazon's logistics network.

Basic Qualifications


- Bachelor's degree
- 8+ years of experience in data engineering/analytics
- 3+ years of team leadership experience
- Strong SQL and programming skills (Python, Java, or similar)
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS)
- Proficiency with data warehousing and ETL processes
- Experience with big data technologies
- Understanding of data modeling and database design

Preferred Qualifications

- Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field
- Ability to architect scalable data solutions
- Experience with data governance, security, and compliance requirements
- Track record of building and scaling data engineering teams
- Resource planning and allocation skills
- Agile methodology knowledge
- Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Experience working in logistics, supply chain, or similar complex operational environments

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $153,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $264,500/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
