Join a cutting-edge research project at Oracle Labs and be part of the team revolutionizing database technology! We are seeking a Java developer to contribute to our Multilingual Engine (MLE) project, which aims to transform the way applications interact with database systems. If you have 2-3 years of experience and a passion for Java, this is your opportunity to make a significant impact in the world of data and programming languages.
Job Description
Oracle Labs invites ambitious software developers to embark on an exciting journey with our MLE team. This project is at the forefront of database innovation, and we need your Java expertise to make our vision a reality.
What You’ll Work On
The Multilingual Engine (MLE) project is all about bringing programming languages and database systems closer together. Here's what our team is working towards:
- Programming Language Runtimes in DBMS: We are exploring how to leverage programming language runtimes within the database system. Our goal is to enable application development and data science tasks to be executed directly in the database, reducing network latency and improving performance.
- Efficient Data Access: By running code close to the data, we aim to optimize data-intensive tasks, such as training machine learning models in Python, directly within the Oracle Database.
- Polyglot Programming: The MLE project focuses on supporting modern and popular languages and frameworks, thanks to the power of GraalVM, Oracle Labs' high-performance polyglot runtime.
- JavaScript Integration: A key milestone of the project is the successful integration of JavaScript support in Oracle Database 23c.
- Just-In-Time (JIT) Compilation: We are also investigating the use of JIT compilation to enhance database query processing, making queries faster and more efficient using GraalVM and the Truffle framework.
Why Oracle Labs is Special
Oracle Labs provides a unique and stimulating work environment:
- Research-Driven Innovation: Be part of a team that turns research into real-world impact. Our MLE project is at the forefront of database technology, shaping the future of data processing.
- Global Collaboration: Our team is spread across Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Morocco, and Redwood Shores, offering a diverse and multicultural work experience. Collaborate with talented individuals from around the world.
- Cutting-Edge Technology: Work with GraalVM, Truffle, and other state-of-the-art tools to push the boundaries of what's possible in database systems.
Your Impact & Responsibilities
As an IC2 Software Developer, you will be a key contributor to the MLE project:
- Java Development: Utilize your Java expertise to develop and optimize the MLE's core functionalities.
- Polyglot Programming Support: Help extend the MLE's capabilities to support multiple programming languages and frameworks.
- Performance Optimization: Work on improving the performance of data-intensive tasks and database queries.
- Research and Development: Participate in research activities, implement new ideas, and contribute to the project's technical documentation.
- Team Collaboration: Collaborate with a diverse team of developers, researchers, and database experts to solve complex problems.
- Build and CI/CD Infrastructure: Work closely with the team to ensure a robust and efficient development process. The build infrastructure is based on Gradle, and you will be involved in optimizing the build process, managing dependencies, and ensuring smooth integration with our CI/CD pipelines
What You’ll Bring
We are looking for a Java developer with the following qualifications:
Essential Qualifications:
- Experience: 2-3 years of professional Java development experience.
- Programming Skills: Proficiency in Java is a must. Knowledge of C and JavaScript/TypeScript is advantageous.
- Software Development Fundamentals: A solid understanding of software design, data structures, and algorithms.
- Communication and Collaboration: Effective communication skills for working in a global team environment.
- Education: University degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Desirable Skills:
- Database Systems: Familiarity with database concepts and SQL is advantageous.
- Agile Methodology: Experience working in an agile development environment.
- Jenkins and Gradle: Experience with Gradle as well as Jenkins or similar CI/CD tools is advantageous, as you will help automate and streamline the software delivery process.
