Internal Job Title: Hardware Engineer
Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time

Position Summary

As an Electronics (Hardware) Engineer in our Product Development group, you will play a key part in the design and development of embedded systems that support a range of CBN identity products and identity-adjacent systems.

 

Responsibilities

Design, Development and Support

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define system requirements and architectural specifications.
  • Design, develop, and test electronic hardware and embedded systems for smartcard applications.
  • Perform PCB design, schematic capture, and layout using industry-standard tools.
  • Develop firmware and software in C# or other languages for embedded platforms.
  • Develop and implement algorithms for image processing and computer vision tasks.
  • Conduct system-level debugging, validation, and performance optimization.
  • Stay current with emerging technonologies and trends in electronics, smartcards, and image processing and research and recommend improvements to existing products and designs.
  • Provide troubleshooting support to resolved hardware issues in deployed systems.
  • Work with machine vision products and personnel in Support of QA initiatives.

Documentation

  • Create detailed documentation that captures design processes, technical specifications, and test procedures.

Compliance

  • Ensure product designs meet industry standards (FCC, CE, RoHS, ISO) and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and security protocols for smartcard systems (e.g., ISO/IEC 7816, EMV, GlobalPlatform).

 

Qualifications

Education and Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of the following:
    • Embedded systems
    • Radio Frequency (RF) systems
    • Cryptography and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)
    • Image processing
    • Smartcards (asset)
    • Relevant industry standards and compliance frameworks

Experience

  • 3-7 years of experience in relevant position (hardware engineering, electrical engineering, etc.)
  • Experience designing embedded systems

Technical Environment

  • Embedded Systems: ARM Cortex, PIC, AVR, ESP32, Raspberry Pi.
  • Programming Languages: Java, JavaCard, C#, Python.
  • Industry Standards & Compliance: FCC, CE, ISO, RoHS, ICAO, AAMVA.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Language: Fluency in English (reading, writing, speaking)
  • Security Clearance: Ability to obtain (in a timely manner) and maintain Government of Canada Reliability (Level I) personal security clearance
