Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('SpinCo') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025.
Job Description
Position Overview:
As the leader of the data engineering department, you will be responsible for overseeing the design, development, and implementation of robust data architecture and pipelines that support critical business decisions, analytics, and product development. This role is crucial in creating a connected data ecosystem that unleashes the power of our first party, third party and zero party data to drive innovation and growth. Combined with our strategic data platform, this data ecosystem is at the core of making intelligent customer and business decisions.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor a high-performing data engineering team, setting clear objectives, fostering a collaborative environment, and driving team growth. Promote a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
- Develop and execute the strategic vision for data engineering, aligning with overall business objectives.
- Oversee the design, build, testing, scaling, and maintenance of data pipelines from various source systems and streams (internal, third-party, cloud-based, etc.), according to business and technical requirements.
- Ensure data accuracy, completeness, and consistency across various sources.
- Collaborate with data scientists and business teams to improve data models that feed business intelligence tools, increasing data accessibility and fostering data-driven decision-making across the organization.
- Design and implement data models and structures that support analytics, business intelligence, and reporting needs, ensuring the efficiency and scalability of data systems.
- Drive innovation and adoption of new technologies to enhance data engineering capabilities, continuously optimizing and fine-tuning data pipelines for speed and scalability.
- Foster the growth of your team members through coaching, mentorship, and opportunities for technical development. Lead recruitment efforts to expand the data engineering team and build a diverse, talented workforce.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience (10+ years) in data engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role, managing data engineering teams in a media or content-driven environment.
- Experience with media-specific data platforms, including content management systems, ad tech, and digital media analytics tools.
Desired Qualifications
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or Scala for data processing tasks.
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) and cloud data warehouses (e.g., Redshift, Snowflake).
- Expertise in SQL/ NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB, BigQuery, or similar), and big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, etc.).
- Strong background in designing and building complex, high-performance data systems, including data lakes, data warehouses, and real-time data pipelines.
- Proven ability to manage and scale a growing team of data engineers, providing both technical guidance and career development.
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate with other teams and stakeholders.
- Familiarity with data visualization tools like Tableau or Looker.
- Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams in a matrixed organization.
- Experience with machine learning and data science workflows.
- Familiarity with media industry standards and analytics platforms (e.g., Nielsen, comScore, etc.).
- Strong decision-making skills and adaptability to changing circumstances.
- Exposure to agile development practices and project management tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence).
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Additional Requirements:
Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week. Subject to change based on Manager discussion or business need.
