Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the role
We are seeking a Policy Programs and Partnerships manager to join our Policy team to enhance Anthropic's policy brand and influence in Washington and beyond. This role will be instrumental in executing our Policy Programs and Partnerships Strategy, focusing on increasing awareness and understanding of Anthropic's policy views among stakeholders and influencers outside of national security and intelligence circles.
Role Summary

- Build strategic partnerships that position Anthropic as a thought leader
- Create signature programs that differentiate Anthropic in Washington's AI policy landscape
This role sits at the strategic nexus between government relations and communications, but is distinct from both functions. Rather than direct lobbying or media relations, this position focuses on developing innovative programs and partnerships that amplify Anthropic's policy influence through creative engagement strategies.
The ideal candidate is a strategic and creative thinker who can envision and implement unique approaches to policy influence beyond traditional government relations tactics. You'll identify untapped opportunities to shape the AI governance conversation and develop signature initiatives that distinguish Anthropic in Washington's policy landscape and beyond.
Examples might include curating interactive Claude policy demonstrations for key stakeholders, developing a signature thought leadership series with influential policy institutions, or creating unique engagement formats that showcase Anthropic's distinct approach to AI governance.
Anthropic is equal parts research lab, policy think-tank, and technology startup. We care deeply about safe development of AI systems and build partnerships with governments through proactive, opinionated, substantive policy conversations. This role offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of AI policy, playing a central role in building and executing programs that amplify Anthropic's policy presence in D.C.
Success in this role means developing creative initiatives that measurably expand Anthropic's policy influence beyond traditional channels and position the company as a unique voice in AI governance conversations.
Responsibilities:

- Design and nurture strategic partnerships with influential stakeholders, (e.g. think tanks, academic institutions, civil society, and Claude users) that position Anthropic as a thought leader in AI governance
- Create signature "policy brand moments" that differentiate Anthropic in DC's crowded AI conversation, including innovative event formats, policy salons, and demonstration experiences
- Build and fortify strategic constituencies for Anthropic's policy and product work
- Working with comms, identify and secure high-value speaking platforms and policy forums that elevate Anthropic's unique perspectives on responsible AI development
- Working with our government relations and product policy teams, manage production and cadence of accessible written content on technical AI topics for policymakers and their staff
- Develop a coordinated stakeholder engagement strategy, in coordination with external affairs, targeting non-traditional audiences beyond national security circles, including civil society leaders and emerging policy influencers
- Work with comms and events colleagues to plan and execute strategic events and speaking opportunities for Anthropic leaders at high-impact D.C. gatherings
- Create strategy for immersive Claude demonstration experiences tailored for non-technical audiences, focusing on policymakers, communications professionals, and policy influencers
- Establish measurable metrics to track policy influence and brand recognition progression in Washington
- Coordinate with the Societal Impacts team to effectively communicate Anthropic's AI economic and social research to a broad policy stakeholder audience
- Implement and maintain a Policy CRM and public affairs calendar to prioritize and track engagements and ensure they align with our policy objectives
You may be a good fit if you:
- Have 10+ years of professional experience in public affairs, government relations, or communications, with demonstrated success influencing technology policy through non-traditional channels
- Demonstrated ability to think creatively about policy influence beyond traditional lobbying or PR approaches
- Experience designing and implementing innovative policy programs that created measurable impact
- Strong strategic thinking skills with the ability to identify unique opportunities in a crowded policy space
- Possess a deep understanding of DC and broader political dynamics and have established relationships across diverse policy stakeholders
- Have a track record of successfully planning and executing high-impact events and policy programs
- Excel at translating complex technical topics into accessible and relevant information for non-technical audiences
- Are skilled at building and maintaining relationships with diverse stakeholders
- Have experience in developing and implementing public affairs strategies in a fast-paced environment
- Are passionate about AI policy and align with Anthropic's safety mission and public benefit corporation orientation
- Hold at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field
The expected salary range for this position is:
Annual Salary:$285,000—$325,000 USDLogistics
Education requirements: We require at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
