Department Overview - UKDT

UKDT Banking Supervision directorate is responsible for the supervision of over 700 banks, building societies and credit unions. Its aim is to contribute to a safe, sound, and competitive UK banking system through delivering effective prudential supervision.

Division Overview - Analytics & Mutuals Division (AMD) 

AMD consists of four units:

1. Large Building Societies, Small Building Societies, and Credit Unions: Supervises the UK's building societies and credit unions.
2. Data & Analytics Team: enables UKDT supervisors to use data effectively, develops data tools, and engages in data/AI projects.

The Data & Analytics Team offers technical data services and collaborates with other UKDT teams to improve supervisory outcomes. It includes:

• Core Data Team: Maintains and develops data tools and thematic analytical outputs to help supervisors and management understand risks.
• Data Science Team: Creates innovative tools and uses new technologies (like Azure Cloud and Databricks) for key projects. Part of a network led by the PRA’s RegTech, Data and Innovation Division (RDID).

The team also works on data quality, improving data culture, and participates in various data and AI related groups.

Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Scale G Data Scientist within the Data Science Team. The team comprises of a Senior Data Scientist and two Scale F Data Scientists, dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what's possible.

What You'll Do:

• Enhance Data-Led Supervision: Support the delivery of tools that contribute to advancing UKDT’s goals and the PRA’s data-driven agenda.
• Collaborate and Create: Work alongside data scientists and build inclusive relationships with end-users including supervisors to implement innovative solutions that meet user needs.
• Cross-Team Projects: Partner with RDID data scientists on projects, data strategy, and innovation.
• Develop and Share Knowledge: Keep up to date with latest data science developments and share knowledge to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.

Your Toolkit:

• Programming Proficiency: Experience with Python, R, SQL, and data visualization tools like R Shiny, Streamlit, Power BI, and Tableau.
• Cloud Experience/Knowledge: Eager to expand your knowledge of Azure and enterprise platforms like PositConnect.

Role Requirements

Minimum Criteria 

• Experience in a role that uses programming languages (Python, R, SQL) to draw insights from large structured and unstructured data.
• Experience visualising/presenting data for stakeholders using data visualisation tools such as (R Shiny, Streamlit, Power BI, Tableau).
• A proactive approach to learning new technologies and advancements in Data Science.
• Good analytical skills and ability to synthesise key messages from data, both in writing and verbally.
• Good inter-personal skills and experience of working in a team.
• Good awareness of software engineering and coding best practices.

Desirable Criteria 

One or more of the following would also be desirable. However, we are keen for the applicant to have a willingness to learn new things.

• Knowledge and/or experience with machine learning algorithms, concepts, and packages. 
• Knowledge and/or experience with Large Language models.
• Knowledge and/or experience with Microsoft Azure data scientist stack (e.g. Azure ML, Databricks, cognitive services, OpenAI).
• An interest in financial markets and regulation and keenness to learn about financial concepts and metrics.

  The salary on offer ranges between £39,120 and £25, 270. In addition, we also offer a comprehensive benefits package as detailed below:

• Currently a non-contributory, career average pension giving you a guaranteed retirement benefit of 1/80th of your annual salary for every year worked. There is the option to increase your pension (to 1/65th) or decrease (to 1/105th) in exchange for salary through our flexible benefits programme each year.  The Bank has the discretion to vary standard accrual rates and dial up and dial down rates at any time and to withdraw dial up and dial down options at any time.
• A discretionary performance award based on a current award pool.
• An 8% benefits allowance with the option to take as salary or purchase a wide range of flexible benefits.   
• 26 days’ annual leave with option to buy up to 12 additional days through flexible benefits. 
• Private medical insurance and income protection.
