Position Summary

 Are you passionate about applying analytics to solve complex industrial challenges? Marathon Petroleum’s Refining Analytics organization is seeking a Senior Analytics Engineer to join our growing team. Refining Analytics applies advanced analytics, modeling, and operations research to support safe, reliable, and optimized decision-making across our refining network to maximize efficiency, minimize risk, and unlock value from every barrel.

This role is ideal for someone with deep technical expertise and a passion for solving operational problems with data. As a Senior Analytics Engineer, you’ll help shape the future of analytics in refining by developing advanced decision support systems, applying statistical and machine learning techniques, and translating complexity into clarity for engineering, maintenance, and operations leaders. You’ll collaborate with refining sites, technical support teams, and enterprise IT to deliver impactful solutions at scale in key initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mentor engineers and analysts in data science best practices, statistical thinking, and problem structuring techniques
  • Liaison with IT teams implementing large data storage structures and pipelines to ensure compatibility with refining data science efforts
  • Perform exploratory data analysis and logistic regression with complex, mixed-type data sets and incorporate the results into decision support systems
  • Collaborate with refining technical support engineers in the adoption of machine learning techniques for predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, and process optimization
  • Incorporation and socialization of statistical reliability techniques into mechanical and process disciplines
  • Manages stakeholder expectations and delivers actionable solutions
  • Collaborate with external partners, research institutions, and subject matter experts to gather domain-specific knowledge and datasets
  • Engagement with senior and executive refining leadership to broaden understanding of the value and risks associated with complex mathematical models

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or related quantitative field.10+ years of relevant experience required
  • Understanding of statistical analysis, machine learning, and anomaly detection
  • Experience applying analytics to reliability engineering, process optimization, or asset performance management in refining or heavy industry.
  • Strong understanding of predictive maintenance, degradation modeling, and operational risk analytics.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical capabilities
  • Demonstrated capability in line and influence leadership

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with stakeholders and executive teams to gather requirements, present architectural proposals, and collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Capability to prepare reports that communicate effectively to non-technical decision-makers
  • Identify and select team members who can integrate with the technology team and add value through application of advanced data analytics
  • Demonstrated facility in the deployment of R (or) Python (or) Wolfram Language (or) and their interfaces to industrially significant databases
  • Capability to use multivariable analysis in using time series and transactional data to surface correlations – including the use of automated time series lagging
